ACC is closely monitoring the ever-changing coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak globally. After careful consideration of the available information to date, we are making the difficult, yet necessary, decision to postpone Corporate Counsel University (CCU), originally scheduled to take place in Denver, CO, June 24-26, 2020. We are taking this action to protect the health and safety of our members, presenters, sponsors, and staff, and all those involved in our events.

Although we are disappointed to not be able to gather this June, we are excited to announce that Corporate Counsel University will return in-person in 2021 – June 14-16 in New Orleans, LA.

We emailed all current registrants on May 18, 2020 regarding this postponement. If you need a re-send of this email, or have any further questions, please contact us at education@acc.com.

We look forward to seeing you in New Orleans in June 2021!

Privilege & Communications Best Practices for In-House Lawyers

Identifying privilege for business communications is complex.  In-house lawyers often face the following challenges:

  1. Which internal emails are covered by solicitor-client privilege?  What are the best practices to help bolster claims of privilege for internal emails?

  2. What is the effect of marking letters “without prejudice”?

  3. How to manage privilege and internal investigations

Panelists Charlotte Feasby, Senior Counsel at Syncrude Canada Ltd, Laurie Goldbach, Partner at BLG; and Clay Jacobson, Partner at BLG will discuss the above questions, give an update on current issues relating to privilege, including:

  • A practical overview of solicitor client, litigation, common interest, and settlement privilege
  • Best practices for ensuring the various kinds of privilege
  • Protecting privilege in internal investigations

Registration and lunch: 11:30 am – 12:00 pm

Session and Q & A: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

In this roundtable discussion, Bindu Cudjoe, CWB Financial and Nancy Prevost, Oxford Properties Group  will discuss what you can do as a law department leader to drive change, whether transformational or project driven, while engaging and rallying your team and creating an environment that can sustain and embrace that momentum and urgency for the future.

While the only thing constant is change itself, especially in today’s dynamic economy, most lawyers are resistant to change. Some of the most well-known research on this is by Dr. Larry Richards, which highlights how lawyers on average, measure high on skepticism, urgency and autonomy, and low on sociability and resilience – all key characteristics that influence one’s ability to adapt to change. As a law department leader, you have an important role as strategic business partner and catalyst, but while you may see that vision and direction, it can often be a challenge to bring the team along with you on the journey.
