We invite you to an in-person seminar on either February 7 or February 8, 2024.  Join Amundsen Davis L&E attorney, Beverly Alfon and Ian Botnick, Assistant GC of Atkore.

The Illinois Paid Leave For All Workers Act (effective January 1, 2024) is in place, and Cook County (enforcement postponed to February 1, 2024) and the City of Chicago (effective July 1, 2024), also recently overhauled their paid leave ordinances.  Compliance is going to require more than an updated leave policy.  Find out how to navigate these laws and get answers to critical questions such as:

•    Which one of these laws applies to your business?  What if some employees are located in Chicago or cities in Cook County and other employees are located elsewhere in Illinois?  How do these laws apply to remote employees? What is the impact on employees covered by collective bargaining agreements?
•    What does each of these laws require in terms of usage, accrual and carryover or frontloading, waiting periods, payout at termination, and recordkeeping?  How do they differ?
•    What are some recommendations and best practices for compliance?

ACC Houston January Chapter Meeting CLE
Damages & Indemnities: Who is Responsible and for What?
January 31, 2024 | 11:30 am - 1:00 pm | Landry's Seafood House - The Woodlands

This presentation will discuss the misunderstanding of contract damages and what indemnification means.

Join your colleagues for lunch, an afternoon of engaging CLE panels and happy hour! First, Faegre Drinker Partner Mike Kanute and Associate Bryan Pasciak will discuss what to do if your CEO or CFO receives a Notice of Deposition for a personal injury case. This session will discuss Apex depositions and strategies for handling them, particularly in Illinois!

Next, Associate Tess Godhardt, Isabelle Korshak, senior counsel, litigation at The Kraft Heinz Company and Luis Quiñones Fernandez, senior counsel, global investigations at GE Aerospace, will cover what you need to know about the world of messaging and electronically stored information. Ephemeral messages are electronic communications that are automatically erased by the platform upon which they are being sent. Due to the 2015 Federal Rules of Civil Procedure amendments, changes in how individuals communicate at work, and the recent Google decision, companies and clients could be subject to severe discovery sanctions if certain ephemeral messages are not preserved.

Finally, Partner Ruben Gonzalez will join Kevin Morrow, senior AVP and litigation counsel with Revantage Corporate Services, and Raymond Rushing, corporate counsel of global litigation at Cummins Inc., as they discuss the interplay between legal design thinking and artificial intelligence (AI), and how to utilize AI as a partner in the generation of ideas.

Our afternoon’s schedule will look like:
•    12:30 – 1:00 PM: Check-in and Lunch
•    1:00 – 2:00 PM: Did Your CEO or CFO Just Receive a Notice of Deposition for That Pesky PI Case?
•    2:05 – 3:05 PM: The World of Messaging and Electronically Stored Information Continues to Evolve — Here’s What You Need to Know About Those Slack and Teams Messages!
•    3:10 – 4:10 PM: How AI Can Help Us Be More Like Museum Curators
•    4:10 – 5:30 PM: Happy Hour

Come for the CLE and stay for the networking!

This interactive roundtable discussion will identify the wage and hour hot spots that employers should have on their radar right now in Illinois, including Chicago paid sick leave, equal pay registration certificates, pay transparency requirements, misclassification risks, and offer practical compliance considerations.

Complimentary lunch will be offered. ACC Chicago Roundtables are designed to give those who are interested in a particular topic a chance to interact and discuss in an intimate small group session.

By now, it is axiomatic that the attorney-client privilege applies to entities. Corporations, like individuals, enjoy the protection of the attorney-client privilege without distinction to lawyers who are in-house or outside counsel for an organization. Although the availability of privilege is undisputed, the administration of the attorney-client privilege in the case of corporations presents a patchwork of problems. Among those are questions relating to who speaks for the corporation, the nature of protected communications, and who can waive the privilege on the corporation’s behalf. In this presentation, we will unravel the issues on preserving corporate privilege and show you how to keep the confidentiality of your business communications from coming undone.

As invited guests, you will enjoy your choice of Manicure or Pedicure with Marquee Sponsor BoyarMiller.
