The remote work environments in which many in-house lawyers now find themselves present interesting challenges - and opportunities - for career advancement. Come hear from in-house attorneys who have achieved promotions and other forms of advancement while working remotely, along with managers and recruiters involved in advancement decisions and career development initiatives in their departments.

Attendees can expect to learn about specific actions and strategies employed by attorneys who have 'made their own luck' to advance despite the limitations caused by being remote. In addition, we will share insights about things in-house managers and law departments can do to foster career development and advancement within geographically dispersed teams.

For many people, events of the past few years have led to greater awareness of racial and social justice issues – and a desire to be a more active ally in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion. No matter where they sit in their organizations, lawyers have the skills to use their voices to have an impact and inspire others to do the same.

In this workshop, we will learn about ways in which we can be DEI influencers in our organizations – in ways that work for us. You can share messages or information that raise awareness of DEI issues you encounter and lessons you learn, or amplify information and messages you receive from others. Or you can spearhead or support initiatives or programs that would emphasize the importance of diversity in both internal and external practices.

The program will begin with a discussion among the panelists, who will tell us what steps they took to become DEI influencers and what they have learned about how to be effective in that role. Then, we will have breakouts to share ideas of how we can all contribute to racial and social justice efforts as influencers.

Panel:

Wesley Bizzell, Senior Assistant General Counsel and Managing Director of Political Law & Ethics Programs, Altria Client Services LLC, and immediate past-president, National LGBTQ+ Bar Association

Yolanda Hawkins-Bautista, Associate General Counsel, Litigation, Freddie Mac, and past-president of the Women's Bar Association of D.C.

Sandy Paik, Deputy General Counsel, Foulger-Pratt

DeShaun Wise Porter, Global Head of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion &  Engagement, Hilton

Debbie Tang, Partner & Executive Recruiter, Bridge Partners, will moderate the discussion.

This program is presented by the
ACC NCR Career Development Committee and the DEI Leadership Development Subcommittee.
