Recognizing and Reducing Bias Around Lawyers “Flexing”

More attorneys are working in FWA where they may work flexible hours (time of day), reduced hours, or at flexible location(s). Lawyers must learn to manage and navigate flexible work schedules and that is all the more important in the age of working from home during times of conflict and uncertainty. One key to making “flex” work is to bust myths associated with flexible schedules and address the blind spots, stigma, and stereotypes that get in the way of success in legal practice.

During this session, you will learn about:

  • Stigma, stereotypes, bias and discrimination against attorneys with FWA, and especially impacts on women, attorney parents • Bias assignments, team interactions, and performance reviews of attorneys with FWA
  • Organizational support needed for successful FWA
  • Strategies to reduce or eliminate bias in transitions to and from FWA or leaves
  • Strategies to reduce or eliminate bias in assignments, team interactions, and reviews of FWA attorneys

Join us for an evening of cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and catching up with others in the in-house counsel community.

Relax, reconnect with old friends, and make new ones.

Pursuing interests outside of our primary legal job can enhance our well-being and sharing these interests with others can help our sense of connection, another dimension of well-being. Whether your interest is music, knitting, gardening, animals, volunteering or something you’ve turned into an actual business, we’d love to chat with you about it.

The Attorney Well-Being Committee invites our members to join us for an interactive discussion about “Hobbies and Side-Gigs”. The discussion will be led by committee members Jean Chung and Justin Fong. All attendees will be entered into a raffle for a $25 gift card and the attendee with the most interesting hobby or side-gig (as determined by the attendees) will win a $25 gift card!

Canada's New Forced Labour Reporting Law

ACC British Columbia and Bennett Jones LLP invite you to join us for an in-person discussion on supply chain transparency and what the public reporting requirements in Canada's new Forced Labour Reporting Law mean for businesses.

The new law creates a compliance imperative by introducing a mandatory mechanism that will facilitate public and stakeholder scrutiny of the forced labour track records of Canadian government institutions and many private sector businesses.

With the first reports due in May 2024, companies need to act now to enhance their due diligence and proactively identify and mitigate the risk of forced labour or child labour in their supply chains.

Once thought of as the stuff of amateurish virtual games, futuristic movies and imaginary science fiction, engaging in business in a virtual world or a metaverse is close enough to mainstream reality to mandate that we consider its consequences. Described as a shared, online, three-dimensional space where people can live, work, interact and connect virtually, these platforms have integrated into many mainstream uses. ChatGpt and other AI tools have taken the world by storm, from being banned and then reinstated in Italy for data privacy reasons to the loss of IP when used as a development tool. The widespread use of any of these tools demands that you review your policies and global frameworks with enough flexibility to capture what's coming next

Join us for a 60 minute session where we will walk through hypothetical examples and have an interactive discussion about how to adapt your legal frameworks to these new realities of doing business. For example…

  • Are you reviewing your strategy for IP registration and protection in a global, virtual world — including if and where you register your trademarks?
  • Are you restricting access to ChatGpt within your organization or are you integrating it into your business model?
  • How do you plan to manage the collection of personal data, in either a virtual world or an AI training set, and can it be monetized?
  • What do you foresee as your key revenue drivers/business model in a virtual environment? Have you considered which IP you may license for NFTs and the terms of such licenses?
  • With increased network security requirements by regulators, expanding vectors of attack and the heightened sophistication of cyberattacks, have you revisited your cybersecurity policy and data incident procedures recently?
  • Have you created specific terms and conditions to govern interactions with business customers and individual consumers using your products/services?

Pay equity and transparency continue to be a hot topic and challenge in California.  The State has continued to expand its pay disclosure and pay reporting requirements and we do not expect this trend to change anytime soon.  This program will examine developments in recent state laws, federal pay equity initiatives, and agency enforcement. We will also look at the increased focus on pay equity issues on ESG activism.
