The world is changing rapidly and businesses are required to move quickly and pivot to remain relevant and keep afloat during these weird times. Australia has passed the 100 day mark of dealing with COVID19 and the world has settled into the virtual world. Legal counsel are critical to decision-making and play a critical role in ensuring risk and compliance are mitigated and controlled. For those who are new to in-house, what can you do to make your mark and demonstrate your worth to the business during these times? What skills are required to ensure that you are being as relevant and critical to the business strategy and operations?

This virtual panel discussion will work through these questions and more. Our guests will share their insights and open it up to the floor to hear what is happening in your organisation and the impact and value you are able to provide to your team and organisation during these times.

Following the presentation ACC Australia will be hosting a virtual networking session from 12.00 PM using our new virtual event platform! Grab a drink and we’ll break you into smaller groups so that you can catch up with peers, discuss the insights gained, share what you’ve been experiencing in your own workplace.

Please note registrations for this event are now closed.

Senior in-house lawyers are increasingly required to bring more to the table than just their legal expertise. As well as legal and business advisors, senior in-house lawyers are expected to be agile leaders of growth, change and innovation.

The pandemic has given agile leadership the ultimate test, and the best leaders are using their self-disruptive skills to help their organisations adapt. In this webinar, Korn Ferry will discuss how lawyers can help lead their teams and businesses to not only survive, but thrive, in crisis and beyond. This session will focus on:

  • What we have learned about leadership in crisis
  • Defining The Self-Disruptive Leader
  • How to cultivate leadership capabilities
  • Guidance to help you lead your teams and organisation through the turn.

Whilst people movement is on pause, movement of goods and services continues, perhaps more essential than ever. We will be talking about some of the hot legal issues, including brand reputation and IP protection, and managing insolvency, product liability, dispute and corruption risks.

The 2020 ACC In-house Counsel Certification Program will be run virtually. With the training being conducted from 5:30 pm- 7:30 pm AEST,  Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, evenings for three weeks from Tuesday 11 August - Thursday 27 August.

The Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) In-house Counsel Certification Program covers the core competencies that are applied by corporate counsel professionals. ACC Certification draws on the collective knowledge and experience of ACC’s global membership to identify what is essential to a successful in-house practice worldwide. The program’s 24 curriculum hours targets three competency areas: Stakeholder Relations, Department Management, and Legal Services. The program includes a mix of presented content, interactive discussions as well as applied project and group tasks. The program concludes with a final assessment to earn the unique In-House Counsel Certification. Course participants will gain 24 CPD points upon completion and will learn how to:

  • Translate legal knowledge into business solutions that meet client expectations.
  • Build the emotional intelligence and people management skills necessary for navigating the unique culture of their organisation.
  • Deploy value-based policies, along with effective employee training, to help protect their organisation from legal liability.
  • Implement tech-forward processes that can take their legal operations to a new level of efficiency.
  • Contribute to financial decision-making and strategic planning, both on the law department level and across the organisation.
  • Articulate, as well as demonstrate, the value of the law department.

“I am always looking at striving towards best practice but find in a busy work environment the time to assess and reflect is limited. The ACC  in-house certification program allowed me to take some time out and listen, learn and develop from a wide range of in house experts. The course is fast paced, engaging and provides you with a vast tool kit of best practice to take back to your role and organisation.”

Jason Arnheim, General Counsel Australasia, Orora Limited. ACC In-house Certification Program Alumni, Sydney 2019

"The ACC In-House Counsel Certification course was the single best learning and networking event I attended in 2019. In four days, the program helped me unpack my skills and experiences as a senior in-house counsel managing a team; and realign them with international best practices to support me in effectively advising my organisation and leading the in-house function. This course is a must for in-house lawyers ready to effectively lead their organisation into the future."

Tyrilly Csillag, Head of In-House, Practical Law at Thomson Reuters. ACC In-house Certification Alumni, Sydney 2019.

Non-financial risks can inflict a devastating financial impact on a company.  ASIC and other key regulators are seeking to hold corporates to account for failing to exercise active stewardship of non-financial risk. Australian directors and senior executives are increasingly alive to these risks in the wake of COVID-19.

Join Gilbert + Tobin’s market-leading experts David Clee and Elizabeth Hill for a live webinar on board oversight and monitoring of non-financial risks.

This webinar will explore:

  • the different types of non-financial risk;
  • the impact of failing to oversee and monitor non-financial risk;
  • the roles and responsibilities of directors and officers having regard to the observations made by ASIC’s Corporate Governance Task Force on the board’s role in the oversight and management of non-financial risk;
  • the attitude of other key regulators, including APRA and AUSTRAC; and
  • market changes and international observations.

As COVID-19 continues to pose  significant challenges to most sectors of the economy, Baker McKenzie Partners Adrian Lawrence and Aleisa Crepin take a look at key contractual provisions and  doctrines relevant to disrupted commercial dealings, including:

  • provisions dealing with delay in performance and the allocation of economic  burdens in the case of such delay;
  • termination of commercial contracts due to force majeure or frustration;
  • other contractual provisions such as stop payments, step-in rights and MAC clauses; and
  • considerations for renegotiation of contracts in the light of continuing  COVID-19 disruptions.

The toll the COVID-19 pandemic has taken on the financial, physical, and mental health of so many has been something none of us could have imagined six-months ago. While some in-house lawyers have found themselves without a job or on reduced hours, the vast majority are still working, only now from their homes, and under even higher levels of stress then previously experienced. While paid workload has increased in response to the changing regulatory and employment landscape, so too has childcare and domestic labour. Meanwhile, de-stressing methods, such as attending a gym or socialising outside of small groups, are no longer an option.

If ever there was a time for mental health to be handled with care, now is it!

In this webinar, Paul Garth (Account Director, Vario from Pinsent Masons) will engage with Workplace Mental Health Advocate and Award-Winning Senior In-house Lawyer at Spark (NZ), Grant Pritchard, to unpack the challenges felt by in-house legal teams at this time. Together they will talk through what we’re seeing in management strategies as we collectively adapt to the new environment and care for the mental health of teams while maintaining high productivity through this trying time.

This webinar will tackle the topic of stigma and provide tips on how to maintain a sense of privacy and security in dealing with whatever struggles you or members of your team are experiencing. This will not be a talk that reruns the normal fix for managing anxiety such as getting sleep, eating well, meditating, and exercising. We all know what we “should” do – but let’s get real about what we “can” do and share practical tips on how to manage differently in this changing time.

The session will leave you with a greater sense of normality and start you imagining the possibilities ahead in the brave new world.

The Coronavirus crisis has driven an unprecedented global experiment in remote working and social control with the end of the crisis unlikely to see business and society simply return to the way it used to be - many profound changes will remain to form a "new normal"...and many of these changes will be driven by technology, data and artificial intelligence.

In this engaging webinar, former Facebook ANZ CEO, Stephen Scheeler will unpack seven themes around how the world will change in a post-lockdown era, and what in-house legal counsel need to start considering now in order to prepare for this fast-approaching new normal.

These themes are:
1.    Social distancing becomes the law
2.    People are removed
3.    Ecosystems and supply chains are pandemic-proofed
4.    Data and technology step in to enable quick scaling
5.    Privacy is redefined
6.    Remote working accelerates
7.    Globalisation takes a hit

Following Stephen's presentation ACC Australia will be hosting a virtual networking session from 5.00 PM using our new virtual event platform! Grab a drink and we’ll break you into smaller groups so that you can catch up with peers, discuss the insights gained, share what you’ve been experiencing in your own workplace and how you’re planning for the “new normal”.

Given the success of our first social event on 14 May, we will again be hosting a virtual social catch up for our Victorian members, celebrating getting through another week.

You'll be matched up in small groups and given the opportunity to socialise with your in-house colleagues over a coffee. Please come camera ready and ready to chat!
