This PowerPoint presentation, which accompanied an ACC Europe Chapter webcast, begins with a Facebook-related hypothetical situation, and discusses the dangers of social media in the workplace, online bullying and harassment, and French and German statutory approaches to the issue.

Canadian employment and human rights laws and the regulatory environment are very different from those in the United States. Efforts to use or impose American forms of contract hiring and termination practices are often unenforceable or illegal in Canada.

Does your company have a wellness program? This session will address federal and common state restrictions, and go through the strategies that will assist your company in developing a successful program, incorporating the Small Law Department Committee's InfoPak on this topic. In-house counsel that implement a program in their own companies may achieve fame and fortune for initiating a program that saves the company money and gets their employee base healthy. Who knows, in the process some may even develop a smaller waistline!

What do you do when you are handed control of the HR department? It is essential to keep up to date on various laws and policies. To meet this challenge, this session will cover RIF's, ERISA, WARN, cultural issues with foreign subsidiaries (which actually apply in the states), works councils, language, expatriates, data privacy, redundancies, benefits (national schemes versus local plans) and unions in the United States and in other countries.

You just got the papers. One of your company’s employees has filed a discrimination complaint with the EEOC. Now what? This is a first for you and your organization. Where do you begin? This presentation provided a brief background on the law of discrimination and wrongful termination. It also gave practical tips regarding investigations and other critical steps in-house counsel should take upon learning of such a complaint. Finally, the presenters provided tips on how to avoid such a situation in the future.
