The Legal Outreach Professional Development Program Presents: A Career Panel and Speed Networking with the ACC-NYC and Mintz: Mastering the Art of Conversation

Legal Outreach has developed a Professional Development and Exposure Program (PDEP), the purpose of which is to help prepare high school students for its Summer Internship Program – a five-week program where rising sophomore students are placed at public interest, judicial, financial, and private law firms with the hope that they will be inspired to pursue professional careers, particularly within the field of law.  The virtual event will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 from 4 – 6 pm.  Beginning July 10th, students will be serving as interns at various placements.  The goal of the Career Panel and Speed Networking event is to expose the students to various legal careers from a mix of in-house attorneys and law firm partners and to help students hone their conversational and networking skills as they will be working directly with attorneys and other legal professionals throughout the summer.  For many teens, the idea of initiating and maintaining a conversation with an adult is daunting, to say the least, so the more practice and constructive feedback they receive, the better.

To help students prepare for their internships, they will participate in 3 rounds of 15-20 minute speed-communication sessions, similar to speed-dating.  Approximately fifty-four students will paired in groups of 2 students with 2 volunteer attorneys for each round and will be assigned to a dedicated breakout room for the sessions.  In each round, there will be three timed discussion topics: (1) Getting to Know You; (2) Choosing Colleges and Careers; and (3) Hot Topic.
