We are deep into another year of lawmaking in the California legislature, and, as usual, a number of significant employment-related bills are currently making their way through the Assembly and Senate. Join Tia Butler and Katie McCray to learn about the bills that may become law in 2022 and how they could change employers’ obligations in the coming year. Tia and Katie will provide updates on the status of key bills and outline ways employers may wish to prepare for potential upcoming changes.

Executives often scale the corporate ladder by imposing their will, controlling the room and exuding confidence. But these qualities can backfire under vigorous cross-examination challenging motives, competency and business judgment. The stakes are high because the testimony of executives conveys who the company is and frequently plays largely into case outcome. This presentation will cover how to prepare and advise executives so that they are comfortable and ready when placed under oath.

Maintaining a Realistic Work/Life Balance in Uncertain Times

We know that you are still being bombarded with messages about Covid variants, whether that be on television, social media, or in your business and community networks. In uncertain times like these, anxiety, stress, fear and negative thoughts can easily take control. You may be worried about being in crowds, getting a vaccine/booster for you and your loved ones, your office, your clients, your finances or how to manage whatever the future holds as we return to the “new normal” in our personal and professional lives.

Recent studies have shown that there has been a dramatic increase in impairment due to alcoholism, addiction and mental health disorders among members of the legal profession. The statistics are compelling and clearly indicate that 1 out of 3 attorneys will likely have a need for substance use or mental health services at some point in their careers. Accordingly, unexpected events like those we are facing as a society will have an even greater impact on lawyers and those who work with them.

In light of this unprecedented crisis and it’s far- reaching impact, Mr. Quinn will discuss:
• Causes, symptoms and common warning signs of alcohol and substance use disorders, as well as mental health issues such as depression, stress and anxiety.
• The impact of the COVID crisis on mental health issues.
• Fear associated with the uncertainty surrounding the future of the legal industry.
• Well- being strategies to reduce or alleviate these conditions and maintain a healthy work/life balance.
• Why legal professionals are at higher risk to develop mental health and substance use disorders
• Challenges and barriers facing legal professionals from seeking help

Jackson Lewis speakers will talk about means to protect businesses against unfair competition, most recent California case law affecting this legal landscape and practical steps to improve the effectiveness of restrictive covenants.
