Double Your “Kill” Rate: Lessons from the Wild Dogs of Africa!

Join us for this unique and entertaining session on Leadership with Marvin Washington!

Some of the most dreaded words in organizations are “we should have a team look at this”.  This is often because we think we all understand what a high performance team is, but we don’t. I had a similar issue while working with the Government of Botswana. In this session, I’ll share the lessons from my experiences. Specifically, we will discuss why we hate teamwork and how effective teams work. To do this, we gain insights from the Wild Dogs of Africa! While Lions make kills only 40% of their hunts, African Wild Dogs are successful on more than 80% of their hunts. If you want to know why and how their success can translate into successful teams at work, come to the session and find out!

SPEAKER:

Dr. Marvin Washington is a full professor in the Alberta School of Business and Associate Dean of Executive Education. Dr. Washington’s research, teaching, and consulting focus is on processes of organizational and institutional change.

He is the author of three books on leadership and organizational change. His most recent book is on developing your personal mastery (Leading Self before Leading Others with Stephen Hacker at Business Expert Press). Marvin has taught undergraduates, graduates, and executives during his 12 year tenure at the University. Dr. Washington has worked with a variety of organizations such as, Enbridge, AIMCo, Blue Cross, YMCA, Parkland Fuels, Syncrude, and SportChek, many ministries and departments in the Country of Botswana, Government of Alberta and the City of Edmonton.

Prior to life in Academia, Marvin was a manufacturing manager for Procter and Gamble where he was responsible for Zest Bar Soap. When not teaching, researching, or consulting, Marvin can be found hanging out with his two sons (both students at the University of Alberta) or coaching basketball. Since 2009 Marvin has served on the board of Alberta Basketball

Education: Ph.D. in Organization Behavior and Sociology, Northwestern University, Kellogg Graduate School of Management, BS in Industrial Engineering, Northwestern University.

Join us for a panel discussion on Litigation Finance 101:
How Corporations Can Tap Into a New Market to Finance Litigation Costs

Corporations are increasingly turning to litigation funding companies to finance commercial litigation costs, reduce pressure on their budgets, and drive value to their organizations. But many in-house and outside lawyers do not know much about this emerging area of the legal industry or the opportunities it presents for the legal department to add value to the corporation.

In this CLE, we will bring together representatives from leading litigation funders to discuss the following topics:

• Types of cases that corporations finance

• Financing process

• Financing structures, typical terms, and impact on corporate financial statements

• Legal issues related to financing

• How financing is best utilized by in-house counsel
