1.5 Hours of VA MCLE credit pending.

As business transactions become increasingly global, so do government investigations and litigation disputes arising out of those transactions.  Sophisticated counsel in today’s legal climate must be prepared to handle the implications of business agreements and activities that span numerous countries and subject the companies to multiple regulatory and legal regimes.  This includes recognizing that countries have different rules governing the application of the attorney-client privilege and work product doctrine.

This CLE will provide a comprehensive review of the attorney-client privilege globally, with particular emphasis on its application to in-house counsel, while providing practical tips for maximizing protection for communications in countries that do not recognize the privilege as applied to in-house counsel.  We will also discuss examples of different ethics regimes globally.

Presented by Ana Reyes, Partner with Williams & Connolly LLP, Susanna McDonald, Vice President and Chief Legal Officer at Association of Corporate Counsel and Danielle Carter,  Director Compliance, Ethics, and SER at Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

2.0 Hours of VA MCLE ethics credit pending.

These unusual and challenging times of public health concerns, social distancing, economic uncertainty, and school closures have led to a tsunami of legal needs in our community.

Join in-house counsel from around the region for a lunchtime Zoom webinar that highlights a wealth of manageable opportunities for in-house counsel to provide pro bono legal services during the Covid‑19 public health crisis.

This jam-packed hour will introduce you to pro bono opportunities involving transactional work, litigation, wills, voting rights, immigration, and brief advice clinical opportunities. There is truly something for everyone!

Our presentation will be moderated by Pat McGlone, General Counsel of Ullico, and former D.C. Bar President and will include representatives from:

  • D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center
  • DC Volunteer Lawyers Project
  • Kids in Need of Defense
  • Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights
  • Legal Counsel for the Elderly
  • Legal Services of Northern Virginia
  • Maryland Legal Aid

In these difficult times, if you are looking for a way to do good for others, please consider joining your ACC colleagues and attorneys from the Bar Association of Baltimore City Senior Legal Services to help prepare simple wills, general powers of attorney and advanced medical directives for pre-screened, financially qualifying senior citizens on September 10 from 8:30 am to 1 pm at Keswick Multi-Care Center.  This is an easy and low stress event!

No estate planning experience is required and there will be no continuing attorney-client relationship with the client.  Reference materials will be sent out to you by email prior to the event and training will be provided that morning before the clients arrive.  Laptop computers pre-loaded with forms, printers, notaries and experienced estate planning attorneys will all be provided.

Please let us know if you are licensed to practice in Maryland.  A Maryland license is not required to volunteer.  Those not licensed in Maryland will be paired with Maryland bar members and two attorneys will be assigned to a client.

If you would like to join us, please email michael.wentworth@exeloncorp.com directly before September 3rd.

* The term ‘covering’ was coined by  Erving Goffman as part of his work on stigma. Covering is a strategy through which individuals manage or downplay their differences and have a profound impact on an employee’s sense of self.

Bob Dylan’s famous line “The times, they are a’ changin’” has never had more resonance than in the practice of law in 2020.  Remote work, meeting with clients and business partners virtually, taking fingers to keyboard rather than pen to paper, finding and producing evidence from the recesses of computer systems all raise ethical issues you probably never learned in law school or at traditional ethics seminars.

This rather untraditional, interactive presentation will address the ethical challenges of practicing law across electronic frontiers, including

  • How to satisfy the duty of technological knowledge and competence
  • Keeping client information and communications secure
  • Protecting that information across national borders within which privilege laws may differ significantly from those in the U.S.
