In the current economic climate, today's law department faces no small number of challenges. The annual State of the Corporate Law Department Report from Thomson Reuters has seen a shift in Legal Department priorities over the last few years, with compliance & regulatory requirements rising to the top, followed closely by risk management, data privacy & cost control. What's more - 65% of corporate law departments are experiencing increasing matter volumes, while 59% are dealing with flat if not decreasing budgets. In an environment where you're constantly being asked to do more with less, how do you prioritize while also driving the greatest value for your organization?

The hour will include:

  • Data driven insights around the shifting key challenges law departments are facing across the country
  • Roundtable discussion with your peers on actionable best practices including, how to shift outside counsel spend to realize cost savings while not sacrificing quality, how to sustainably bring more work in-house, and how to partner legal with legal ops to measure and track the value of efficiency changes.
  • Report out from roundtable discussion & consensus on best practices for real world use

This presentation will provide summary information on current events surrounding tax controversy and tax fraud. It will also discuss the practical effects of the Inflation Reduction Act, including Internal Revenue Service funding and priorities. Next the presentation will discuss the major IRS tax enforcement priorities that relate to large businesses. The presentation will end with practical solutions to avoid and/or mitigate IRS problems for your company.

1:30 PM     LEADING COMPASSIONATELY FOR LAWYERS

The Leading Compassionately for Lawyers presentation aims to highlight the importance of investing in the well-being of others, provide tangible takeaways as to how to do so with colleagues, and provide insight into recognizing warning signs for mental health distress. Working in the law can sometimes feel overwhelming, isolating, and utterly exhausting. Over time, symptoms of emotional disconnection, cynicism and burnout can arise if we do not actively withstand the challenges of this unique environment.  In this program, lawyers will gain a deeper understanding of the impact of compassionate leadership on collegiality, professionalism, performance, morale and overall success. The presentation will delve into practical techniques and strategies for cultivating compassion to enhance their own leadership styles and actionable ways to show up for others. By learning how to use supportive strategies and implement systems of support, lawyers will understand how leading compassionately can improve mental health not only for themselves but for others in the legal profession.
