ACC Houston Career Advancement Toolkit Webinar: ACC Houston Counsel Development Series
Navigating Work/Life Balance: Tools for Employers and Employees
A 360 view on career change
January 17, 2024 | 12 - 1 pm | Zoom

Join the ACC Houston Chapter and Gibson Arnold & Associates for a lively discussion on Navigating Work/Life Balance: Tools for Employers and Employees. This one-hour event will provide members with tools and exercises in an interactive online session. RSVP today for this extraordinary webinar event.

Change is inevitable. Sometimes we create changes in our lives, while other times it is thrust upon us unexpectedly. We spend our lives in robust careers, dedicating ourselves to organizations, teams and peers while seeking growth, self-development, and inspiration. At times we may find ourselves desiring upward mobility, in a corporate take-over, not with the right culture, in financial instability, or just wanting to do something different. How do I create the life that I want? In the session we will investigate:

• How do I maneuver the ups and downs of change in my career/life?
• When change happens, what are best practices?
• I’m not sure I’m in the right role. How do I investigate other jobs, while keeping my seat warm in my current role?
• I’ve been laid-off – will future employers view my resume less competitively to others who have not?
• I am an experienced lawyer and feel I’m being forced out because of my age and salary? What is next?

You will also learn about Gibson Arnold & Associates and the resources available to you and your colleagues.

JOINTLY PRESENT

Ethical Implications of AI Governance

Presented by: Tedrick Housh, Partner, Lathrop GPM &
Steve Hengeli, Senior Counsel at Garmin International, Inc.

Wednesday, December 13, 2023

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM via Zoom Webinar
The Zoom link for the meeting will be included in your registration confirmation email.

  Program Description:

Organizations are urgently adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) in all facets of their business.  This will enable organizations to do more in a shorter amount of time, which also likely means more contracts, more compliance obligations, and more disputes.  In-house counsel will need to leverage AI tools to keep up – using these tools to draft briefs, review contracts, respond to emails, and so on.  Despite these changes in technology, the central role of ethics remains a constant.  In this presentation, we will discuss the exciting possibilities that AI brings to the legal profession, while explaining how the Rules of Professional Conduct are as relevant as ever.  We will then discuss how AI governance can help legal departments – as well as organizations as a whole – to better use AI in an ethical and responsible manner.

 Topics Include:

  • Background on AI – what it is, why it is important, and how it promises to revolutionize the legal practice (10 minutes)
  • Ethical issues for using AI in legal practice (20 minutes), including:
    • Maintaining competence in use of new technologies (Model Rule 1.1, Comment 8)
    • Managing workload and prompt responsiveness in the age of generative AI (Model Rule 1.3)
    • Keeping your AI prompts secret -- attorney-client confidentiality (Model Rule 1.6) and privilege/work product issues when using generative AI
    • Exercising care when using AI-generated content – the duty of candor (Model 3.3)
    • Avoiding unauthorized practice of law (Model Rule 5.5)
  • AI governance (20 minutes)
    • Oversight
    • Developing policies and procedures to prevent misuse of AI (for legal departments and, more broadly, for the company)
    • Training and awareness
    • Contracts with vendors
  • Questions and answers (10 minutes)

We encourage members to invite an associate or colleague that may be interested in joining the ACC Mid-America Chapter. The Association of Corporate Counsel offers numerous benefits and resources to in-house counsel including CLE offerings and networking opportunities and we look forward to sharing that information with others in the field.
