#RelationshipGoals:  Keys to a Great Relationship with Outside Counsel

Join our panelists as they describe the secrets to building a high functioning relationship with outside counsel, including examples of best practices and what not to do.

Our panel – Alan Mathis, Butler Snow; Monica Fischer, Warren Averett; and Shayla Fletcher, Regions Bank -- will explore related relationship topics and ethical issues such as:

- Do you hire the firm or the lawyer?  How to screen for potential conflicts.

- How to set expectations and communication tips for keeping the relationship on the right path?

- How to maximize value from your outside firm?

- What are signs of trouble with an outside firm?  How to spot ethical violations or red flags?

- When is it time to fire an outside firm or client?  Under what circumstances do you fire a firm in the middle of a case or deal?

Navigating complex regulatory issues, constantly changing technology, and mergers and acquisitions are all in a day’s work for the best corporate in-house counsel in the St. Louis region.

In the St. Louis Business Journal’s 2021 Corporate Counsel Awards, we’ll recognize the best and brightest legal minds in the corporate landscape. These awards will span all levels of the corporate legal department structure, from in-house generalists and specialists to chief legal officers and general counsel, who work in nonprofit organizations or in public or private companies of any size in any industry.

The winners will be honored in a special awards section in the July 16, 2021, issue of the St. Louis Business Journal.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for the awards, nominees must be attorneys who practice law as employees of St. Louis companies or nonprofit organizations and who have achieved distinction among their in-house peers, business associates and the legal community in the areas of leadership, legal and business acumen and/or contributions to the community. Nominees should not be engaged in the private practice of law.

AWARDS

The St. Louis Business Journal will bestow awards in several categories, including by industry (e.g., health care, technology, financial services, distribution and nonprofit) and topic (e.g., M&A, regulatory issues). Full profiles of the winners will be published in the July 16, 2021, issue of the Business Journal.

SELECTION PROCESS

An independent judging panel will determine the winners of the 2021 awards. The judges will use the information submitted in the nominations to make all selections.

The nominations must be completed in one sitting, as information cannot be saved and continued at a later date or time. If you have questions related to the nomination or awards process, contact Special Sections Editor Veneta Rizvic at vrizvic@bizjournals.com

The St. Louis Business Journal will proceed under the impression that nominees are aware of their nomination.

Nominations are due no later than April 16, 2021.
