We are delighted to announce the second ACC Australia and Thomson Reuters’  Employment Law for In-House Counsel Conference which will be held on the 31 August 2023 in the Marble Ballroom at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Sydney.

Employment law continues to be one of the biggest issues facing general counsel.  This year the conference brings to the table the latest contentious issues for In-house Council and will look at the following topics from multiple angles:

  • Enterprise bargaining in 2023,
  • Proactive measures, respect in the workplace,
  • Understanding changes in the Modern Award/Professional Award and their implications for your organisation,
  • Navigating common HR challenges,
  • Recent Fair Work Act amendments,
  • Managing never-ending and ever-changing work volumes of in-house teams,
  • And more!

As 2023 unfolds, the market for M+A remains robust. In-house legal teams need to understand the key elements of a public M+A deal, so that they are prepared for the receipt or initiation of a merger proposal by their company.

This webinar, hosted by Gilbert + Tobin’s M+A team in conjunction with ACC Australia, will explore the essential components of a public M+A deal. It will cover:

  • deal structures – scheme of arrangement vs takeover;
  • pre-deal arrangements;
  • implementation agreements (including common points of negotiation); and
  • recent trends and issues in public M+A.

Gilbert + Tobin are also hosting a webinar on Thursday 17 August 2023 on Be Prepared: Responding to a Control Transaction Approach, which members might be interested in attending. Click here for more details.

There’s significant reform on the horizon for Australia’s privacy laws. Recent high-profile data breaches have put data protection under a microscope and put a fire under the Attorney-General’s ongoing review of the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). Organisations today face increasing pressure from regulators and the marketplace to improve how they collect, use, store and delete personal information, and how they manage data privacy.

This session, hosted by Gilbert + Tobin’s Tech + IP team in conjunction with ACC Australia, will cover:

  • a (brief) history of privacy law and global enforcement trends;
  • major privacy trends in Australia, including data breach class actions, recent enforcement actions for facial recognition technologies and the regulator pile-on to privacy;
  • the December 2022 amendments to the Privacy Act, including the new penalties regime; and
  • the current privacy reform process in Australia and a rundown of key proposals raised in the Attorney-General’s review of the Privacy Act.

Networking and buffet lunch: 12:30 pm - 1:00 pm

Presentation: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Since the interim budget in October last year, the Australian economy has shown more resilience than expected. However, with continued pressure on interest rates and the cost of living, everyday Australians and businesses are still feeling the pinch.

Whether spending pressures mean the Government may need to address calls for broader tax reform remains to be seen, such as changes to capital gains tax concessions or the taxation of superannuation.

For gas producers, will the Government increase the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax?

So what will the 2023 Budget deliver?

The ACC has experienced tremendous growth and success in the past 12 months, thanks in no small part to the dedication and passion of our volunteers. From elected leaders to program hosts to writers and speakers, our members have made invaluable contributions to our organization and their communities.

Are you interested in getting involved and making a difference in 2023? Then join us for this exciting webinar where you'll hear from outstanding ACC volunteer leaders and discover the many opportunities available to you. During this webinar, you'll learn about:

  • The benefits of volunteering with the ACC, including professional development and networking opportunities.

The legal profession has made substantial advances in recent years in its understanding of the need to actively invest in protecting and enhancing the mental wellbeing of legal workplaces.

However, progress has been uneven, and there is still much that can be done. Beyond the legal obligations of organisations to provide a psychologically safe workplace, there is also growing acceptance across the profession that delivering a mentally healthy workplace provides significant benefits for business.

This event will feature an interactive panel discussion around implementing mental wellbeing programs in legal workplaces. It will draw on the experiences of leaders in private practice and in-house legal teams to share perspectives on what has worked, what has not, and what the ongoing challenges are. Additionally, the panel will include a representative of law students and young lawyers, who will be able to talk to their expectations of potential employers, and their experience in engaging with legal employers through the recruitment process.

Page Seager Lawyers is excited to host ACC Australia members for an update on major changes to the unfair contract provisions of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth). The changes to the Act will prohibit unfair contract terms in standard form contracts and introduce penalties for contravention of unfair contract term provisions of the Act. These changes come into effect on 10 November 2023.

Join Kathryn Speed and Sarah Standen for an overview of the changes and what steps need to be taken now by organisations to ensure compliance.
