Join the ACC St. Louis and Washington University Olin Business School for a half day program on Building Strategy, Developing Talent on Friday, April 11th at the Knight Center at Washington University.

Today's corporate attorneys are frequently called upon to make critical decisions that impact many different stakeholders. These high-risk, high-opportunity decisions are often made under considerable time pressure. How much weight do we give to analytics and data versus experience, emotion and intuition?

Session #1:  What is Business Strategy?
What is Business Strategy? We all have a sense of what "strategy" is, and many of us develop and implement strategies of various kinds regularly. On the other hand, we sometimes fail to think strategically when we are pressured with immediate concerns, anchored on unquestioned assumptions, or confuse strategy with tactics. This session conceptualizes business strategy to help us avoid these traps.

Session #2:  Goal-Focused Development
Developing talent can be a random and chaotic process. Instead of planning out development, development opportunities are often created reactively through whatever work assignments are available, which may not address an associate’s development needs. During this session, we will examine an intentional approach to development by starting with an assessment of development needs, setting developmental goals, and planning developmental activities. We will also discuss how to involve employees in their own development process in order to drive ownership.

IP Enforcement in the Online Marketplace

Many of the largest online retailers, including Amazon, Temu, and Walmart, have developed mechanisms allowing companies to enforce their IP rights against copycat infringers without entering into litigation.  We will explore the enforcement mechanisms offered by these online retailers and the benefits and legal challenges experienced in enforcing IP rights in the online marketplace.

Who Gets the Check? Recovering Fees & Expenses in Affirmative Litigation (or Never Paying Them at All)

This program will provide tools to help companies best enforce their rights while driving revenue from their legal departments.  The panel will first give an overview of corporate recovery opportunities. Then they will discuss various tools available to cover or recover attorneys’ fees, expenses, and other costs of litigation.  Topics will include:  contract provisions; Georgia and Federal statutes; fee arrangements; and litigation finance.

Navigating Litigation When the Government is Involved

Litigation is always complicated, but litigation involving the government introduces complexity that the standard litigation playbook doesn’t cover.  This program will help prepare you to advance your company’s interests when federal, state, or local governments get involved, using real-world examples to demonstrate best practices and business-oriented solutions.

Opportunities in your career equating to success are rarely happenstance, they're a result of strategic planning and knowing how to accurately portray your professional story.
