Overview (Program Summary)

A program hosted by:

ACC Chicago

In a fast-paced hour, you will meet many new and rapidly changing California employment laws. Give them a chance—you might even find some that you like!

Our topics will include presumption of retaliation in certain terminations, workplace violence prevention standards, expanded paid sick leave, still more restrictions on non-compete agreements, and limitations on employers regarding cannabis use.

We also provide timely reminders of our own rapidly developing laws in Illinois and Chicago in some of these same areas.

Interest Area(s): Employment and Labor

Speakers

Michael D. Wilson, Jr., Shareholder, San Francisco
Michael helps clients navigate the complexities of the ever-changing local, state and federal employment regulatory landscape, so that growth and achieving core business objectives remain the primary focus.  When called upon to investigate workplace disputes, litigate single plaintiff, multi-plaintiff or class action lawsuits, Michael tailors his solutions based on his thorough understanding of his client’s operations and business culture.  Beyond litigation, Michael regularly partners with in-house counsel, corporate executives and HR representatives to provide advice and counsel on compliance with federal, state and local laws.  He develops and updates employee handbooks and company policies for clients operating in multiple jurisdictions and advises employers on risk management.  Michael also counsels clients on best practices for compliance with wage-and-hour laws, the intersection of leave of absence laws, data privacy issues, large scale reductions in force (including state and federal WARN compliance) and pandemic response.

Jennifer L. Colvin, Shareholder, Chicago
Jennifer Colvin’s practice is focused on labor and employment litigation.  She began her legal career as an Administrative Law Judge with the Illinois Labor Relations Board, specializing in public sector labor law.  Jennifer’s current practice ranges from advice and counseling on matters such as employee handbooks, personnel policies, downsizing, family/medical leave, medical examinations, drug testing, discipline and discharge, and non-compete/non-solicitation issues to litigation and alternative dispute resolution of claims under federal, state and local employment laws. Jennifer’s labor law practice includes advising companies regarding grievances and representing companies in labor arbitrations.
