Overview (Program Summary)
A program hosted by:
ACC New York CityUPDATE ~ DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES, THIS EVENT WILL NOW BE HELD VIA ZOOM.
If you would like to volunteer and are unable to attend the career panel, we invite you to join us for the Speed Round Discussions. We ask that volunteers log on no later than 6PM to participate.
Come help us shape the minds of the next generation of attorneys. We are looking for a few ACC-NYC attorney volunteers and a select number of Fordham Law students to join us for the Career Day Panel and to participate in our speed networking rounds with the Legal Outreach students.
WHO:
Legal Outreach has developed a Professional Development and Exposure Program (PDEP), the purpose of which is to help prepare high school students for its Summer Internship Program – a five-week program where rising sophomore students are placed at public interest, judicial, financial, and private law firms with the hope that they will be inspired to pursue professional careers, particularly within the field of law. Beginning July 5th, students will begin serving as summer interns at various law firms and legal departments in the New York City metropolitan area.
WHAT:
To support Legal Outreach’s PDEP, the ACC-NYC, Mintz and Fordham Law School will host a Career Day Panel and Speed Networking event at Fordham Law School on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 event from 5 – 8PM (registration begins at 4:30). The goal of the Career Day Panel and Speed Networking event is to expose the students to various legal careers from a mix of in-house attorneys and law firm partners and to help students hone their conversational and networking skills as they will be working directly with attorneys and other legal professionals throughout the summer. For many teens, the idea of initiating and maintaining a conversation with an adult is daunting, to say the least, so the more practice and constructive feedback they receive, the better.
HOW:
To prepare students for their internships, they will participate in 3 rounds of 15-20 minute speed-communication sessions, similar to speed-dating. Approximately forty-one students will be paired in groups of 2 students with 2 volunteer attorneys (and some may include a 1 volunteer attorney and 1 Fordham Law School student) for each round and will be assigned to a dedicated breakout area for the sessions. In each round, there will be three timed discussion topics: (1) Getting to Know You; (2) Choosing Colleges and Careers; and (3) Hot Topics:
- Getting to Know You (5 min) - students will be assessed on how well they introduce themselves (first impressions), discuss their personal interests and ask questions about the attorneys’/law students’ personal background while sharing information about their own.
- Choosing Colleges and Careers (5 min) - students will be assessed on how well they engage the attorneys/law students with questions pertaining to their high school, college, law school experiences and their current position. Students will also be expected to discuss their career aspirations.
- Hot Topics (5 min) - students will be assessed on their knowledge of current events and how well they engage attorneys/law students in discussions on controversial issues or contemporary topics, such as privacy and social media.
At the end of each round (5 min), the attorneys/law students will give feedback and share some tips on how to be an effective conversationalist and networker.
