As persistent and staggering disparities continue in our criminal justice system for people of color, the intersectionality of poverty adds another layer of complexity to be unraveled. Despite less overall representation in the general population, Black Americans are incarcerated in state prisons at nearly five times the rate of white Americans. Latinx individuals are incarcerated in state prisons at a rate that is 1.3 times the incarceration rate of whites. Following a training session with Bet Tzedek staff attorneys, volunteers will compile information from attendees in order to complete petitions for filing at local courthouses. With an issued court order, pro se litigants will be empowered to update their personal records to reflect their true identity.
