The Intersectionality Between Race, Poverty and the Criminal Justice System

As persistent and staggering disparities continue in our criminal justice system for people of color, the intersectionality of poverty adds another layer of complexity to be unraveled. Despite less overall representation in the general population, Black Americans are incarcerated in state prisons at nearly five times the rate of white Americans. Latinx individuals are incarcerated in state prisons at a rate that is 1.3 times the incarceration rate of whites. Join our esteemed panelists for a dialogue on the intersectionality of race, poverty and the criminal justice system. As we understand the causes and destructive consequences, key take-aways will include what our legal community can do to foster and effectuate change for both the policies, as well as the day-to-day practices that drive these inequalities and disparities systemwide.

Please join ACC SoCal and Bet Tzedek for an afternoon of pro bono service to assist individuals with their Legal Name and/or Gender Marker Change (LNGMC) petition.  Your time will help transgender and gender nonconforming clinic attendees who regularly face accessibility barriers because their identify documents incorrectly describe them as someone else.

Following a training session with Bet Tzedek staff attorneys, volunteers will compile information from attendees in order to complete petitions for filing at local courthouses.  With an issued court order, pro se litigants will be empowered to update their personal records to reflect their true identity.

Join us virtually for Mintz’s Annual Developing Trends in Bet-the-Company Class Actions presentation.  The presentation will cover class action trends in both federal and state court as well as provide an overview of what to expect from the Plaintiff’s bar nationwide.

The presenting panel includes attorneys who specifically deal with class action cases that are on the forefront of developing precedent.  The presentation will highlight the 2021 updates in consumer class action litigation including:

  • The impact of Facebook, Inc. v. Duguid and TransUnion L.L.C. v. Ramirez on TCPA litigation
  • Recent developments in UNRUH and ADA web accessibility litigation
  • Continued growth of California false advertising cases as a basis for federal class action litigation
  • How the implementation of CCPA is impacting privacy litigation in California as well as other updates concerning data breach cases

From the time we first entered law school, we were taught how to “think like a lawyer”. Although this unique thinking style can be a valuable asset, if not properly managed, it can also lead to major impairments in emotional well-being, healthy relationships, cognitive performance and (counterintuitively) professional competence. During this program, you will learn to identify and overcome the thinking patterns that enslave the legal industry, so you can tap into your best and happiest self, optimize your resiliency and performance under pressure, and maximize your thriving in career and life!
