Description:

Washington state has grown to become a tech hub and an ecosystem of startups as talent from big tech (Microsoft, Amazon) gets the itch to build and execute their vision. But in 2020, just 2.3% of VC funding went to women-led startups. This figure ranges from 2-3%. Not great. The VC world is network-based and can be tough for women to break into.

Here’s some data:

• Only 12% of decision-makers at VC firms are women and most firms don’t have a single female partner.

• Of partners at VC firms, only 2.4% are female founding partners.

Partners have significant control over investment decisions. When women venture capitalists do make decisions, they’re twice as likely to invest in female founding teams.

We all know that women are just as capable as men in building and running amazing companies. These numbers should be better.

Please join us on March 3, 2022, at Tavern Hall in Bellevue to network and hear stories and advice from three women who have legal backgrounds and who have first-hand experience hearing and making VC pitches and operating startups in our community. Let’s invest in women, and each other.

Speakers:

  • Jessica Nguyen, Chief Legal Officer of Lexion (moderator)

Jessica is the Chief Legal Officer at Lexion, an AI powered end to end contract management system with a mission to help legal departments be productive, valued, and happy. When not doing legal work, she wears the chief customer advocate hat because she has lived first hand the contract and reporting pain points of Lexion’s customers. Jessica played a big role in helping Lexion build its product and company during its early days, and was also involved with its Series A pitches. Last spring, Lexion closed an oversubscribed Series A $11 million round led by Khosla Ventures with participation from existing investors Madrona Venture Group and Wilson Sonsini law firm.

  • Lekshmi Venu, CEO and Co-Founder at MajorBoost

Lekshmi is the CEO and Co-Founder of MajorBoost, a new health-tech spinout from Seattle’s Allen Institute for AI (AI2) that aims to reimagine how doctor’s offices and insurance companies communicate with each other, using artificial intelligence to deal with time-consuming phone calls. Last summer, MajorBoost received $350k in pre-seed funding from Seattle’s Allen Institute for AI (AI2). She’s an entrepreneur in residence at AI2 and founded MajorBoost in September 2020. Prior to that, Lekshmi spent 6 years at Amazon, where she led machine learning for Amazon Payments. She helped start MajorBoost last September.

  • Elisa La Cava, VEnture Capital Investor at Madrona Venture Group

Elisa is a venture capital investor with Madrona Venture Group, an early stage VC firm that was an early investor in Amazon, Smartsheet, Redfin, and many other successful companies. She sits in the board meetings of many companies (including Lexion’s board meetings) to understand what it takes to build a successful company and has personally heard countless pitches to provide perspective on what investors are seeking when they make their investment decisions. Elisa has a BA from Clarmon McKenna and an MBA in Finance from Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management.

Attorneys hopefully recognize that like many other professionals, their lives are filled to the brim with anxiety and stress. It’s important to be proactive in dealing with it. The consequences of shrugging it off can be catastrophic - not only for them but for their family, staff and friends. One of those consequences is burnout.

And then there’s trauma. The ramifications of trauma aren’t discussed as frequently as those of stress and thus, for many attorneys, trauma is a topic in need of attention. Trauma can be secondary or vicarious. For example, it can be the cumulative effect of listening to a client or witness relay graphic stories and experiences. Trauma also results from a personal loss such as the death of a family member or a close friend or even the grief associated with lost opportunities and unmet expectations due to the cancellation of long planned events.

We are all dealing with the unexpected impact of a generational and community traumatic event – the COVID-19 Pandemic. It’s important to recognize the signs of trauma in yourself as well as in your office staff, family and clients.

Hear from our experienced speaker as he shares his personal story of trauma and anxiety and learn how you can recognize the unhealthy and potentially life threatening shadow it can cast.

Recent studies have shown that there has been a dramatic increase in impairment due to alcoholism, addiction and mental health disorders among members of the legal profession. The statistics are compelling and clearly indicate that 1 out of 3 attorneys will likely have a need for substance use or mental health services at some point in their careers.

Mr. Quinn will discuss:

1. The early warning signs of impairment, with special emphasis on stress, burnout and trauma, including the mental health impact of the  COVID-19 pandemic.

2. The free services that Lawyers Assistance Programs provide to lawyers, judges, their family members and law students.

3.  A close look at what barriers exist that prevent lawyers and judges from seeking the help they need will be provided.

4. The role that education plays in breaking the stigma and fear associated with addiction and mental illness in the legal profession.

5. How best to approach the impaired individual.

6. Ethical considerations regarding the duty to report an impaired attorney and the exceptions granted to Lawyers Assistance Programs. Lastly, he will discuss the ethical challenges imposed by the imposed isolation of the pandemic and it’s possible long lasting effect on the legal profession.

Help protect our ocean, waves and beaches by volunteering with your fellow ACC-SD members (and their families) for a beach cleanup.

After the challenges of the past two years we are all ready to look forward to an amazing 2022!

Please join us for this virtual webinar led by Dr. Lauren Cook who will give us tools to help us set our personal “SMART” and “SMARTER” goals while integrating concepts of self-compassion and mindfulness. You will also have the opportunity to be paired with a buddy following the event to help encourage you and keep you accountable.

It can be so easy to wish our time away and before we know it, the year has flown by and we wonder where it went. Rather than letting this year happen to you, take an intentional hour to outline the ways you would like to grow professionally and personally this year. By assessing what's going well and what areas of your life you'd like to shift, we'll use this time as an opportunity to designate measurable and manageable goals that will help you feel less stressed and more connected as you start 2022.
