Join Womble Bond Dickinson and ACC Baltimore to start the fall off right and relax before the end of year madness sets in! Catch up with your friends on the evening of September 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Copper Shark.

Enjoy gourmet food, beer, wine and soft drinks at a new venue (only open a year). We will have access to both their inside private dining space and a patio area with a fire pit.

The program will cover the “hot issues” in contracting with AI vendors. Privacy, Cybersecurity and Data Rights issues are receiving significant public attention as the move to leverage new forms of AI (e.g., LLMs) and the proliferation of vendors using AI increases. On whatever the side of the contracting process your organization sits, you will want to be able to understand the risks in the AI supply chain and consider the impact on your contracting process. The presentation will discuss generally how AI processes data and generates results so that attendees can better understand the corresponding contract risks.

"Consumer Privacy Legislation Update:  What In-House Counsel Need to Know"

On January 1, 2023, amendments to the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) went into effect that ended a 3-year exemption for data in the employment context.  For PA-based companies that are subject to the CCPA, this can be significant, as it means that California employees, job applicants, and independent contractors now enjoy the same protections and rights under the CCPA as all other consumers. The sudden end to this exemption has left businesses scrambling to bring their HR data practices into compliance. The intervening year has been a rollercoaster ride for employers hoping to stay on top of regulations which so far have lacked any direct guidance on how rules written for the traditional consumer context can be employed in the unique and often more complex employment context. Adding to the confusion is a series of developments, including a recent court order delaying the enforcement of the updated CCPA regulations until March 29, 2024, and a pending appeal of that order that is currently pending.  Further complicating matters, new consumer privacy laws have taken effect in Virginia, Colorado, and Connecticut, and more have passed and are due to take effect in the coming years, creating a challenge to companies trying to harmonize the various requirements across jurisdictions.  Join Risa B. Boerner, CIPP/US, CIPM and California-based privacy attorney Kile Marks, FIP, CIPP/US, CIPM, CIPT , for a roundtable discussion as they dive into these issues and provide an update on state-specific consumer privacy laws that have passed in 2023.

Speaker:

  • Risa B. Boerner, CIPP/US, CIPM, Partner, Fisher Phillips
  • Kile Marks, FIP, CIPP/US, CIPM, CIPT, Associate, Fisher Phillips

Economic globalization is undergoing a restructuring , including the social/labour front. The rising concern against the use of forced and child labour is impacting Canadian businesses.Canadian corporations have witnessed a series of developments— on the legislative, judicial and regulatory front — that have a legal impact as well as in terms of reputation and brand.

In this ACC session, we will discuss the key elements of the Canadian modern slavery legislation coming into effect on January 1 , 2024 and the flurry of activity from the Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise (CORE). Our comments will incorporate the American experience.

These developments are not the final destination in the social repair of globalization. It is anticipated that the journey from “soft” (voluntary) to "hard“ (mandatory) law will include additional milestones further impacting corporations and their human rights footprint.

Please join us for a timely and informative session on the now critical subject of Business and Human Rights (BHR)
