Join the St. Louis Diversity Committee for social and ACC STL Elimination of Bias CLE:  Forgotten Trunk in the Attic, on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

Missouri, like other states in the center of the U.S., has no extant tribes.

Therefore, the knowledge of either the history of Native Americans or the experience of contemporary ones is even further removed from people’s consciousness. Using startling facts and telling little known stories, as well as his own perspective growing up Native in a non-Native world, this speaker’s presentation starts to remedy this phenomenon.

In this process, he will discuss how Native people are defined by law in this country as sovereign nations.

The Supremacy Clause of the Constitution of the United States (Article VI, Clause 2) establishes that the Constitution, federal laws made pursuant to it, and treaties made under its authority, constitute the "supreme Law of the Land", and thus take priority over any conflicting state laws.

From the beginning of this country, this principle has been eroded as efficiency as Hurricane Helene scoured Asheville, NC late last year. Over the years Congress has established plenary power over the tribes in various ways. Native life in this country has always been defined by law and using the law to preserve our land, culture, and sovereignty.
