This year’s Southern California wildfires have been among the most destructive in history, impacting thousands of homeowners and businesses.  Many in-house attorneys are impacted, and many others are helping employees, friends, and family members navigate their claims with homeowners insurers.  At the same time, in-house attorneys are being asked to pursue and maximize insurance recovery for their companies—some of which sustained property damage during the fires, and many more of which suffered financial losses attributable to evacuation and other government orders, disruption of their supply chain or customer base, and other fire-related impacts to their businesses.

In this presentation, Shaun Crosner and Sandra Smith Thayer—Insurance Recovery Group partners in the Los Angeles office of McGuireWoods—will provide helpful tips to in-house attorneys on various insurance-related subjects.  In addition to providing an overview of the types of coverage available to individuals under their homeowner's policies, the speakers will address the numerous coverages under commercial property insurance and other policies that may help impacted businesses offset their financial losses.  Topics addressed will include:

  • An overview of the claims process under homeowners policies and commercial property policies;
  • A summary of the key property insurance and business interruption coverages most relevant to insured businesses;
  • Tips on how to effectively communicate with insurers;
  • Ways to stay organized throughout the claims process;
  • Documenting and supporting claims;
  • Complying with deadlines and other conditions to coverage; and
  • Negotiating with insurers.

Speaker: Shaun Crosner, McGuire Woods
