The importance of alignment between HR and Legal is often overlooked and even neglected. When these two departments are not united, the company’s culture is negatively affected and employee issues are likely to increase. The HR and Legal departments fulfill a critical stabilizing need for every business, and when the two departments are not harmonized the negative impacts cascades through the organization. Join us for a discussion about the ways you can improve the Legal department’s working relationship with the HR team. Carolyn Shellman of CPS Energy and Jeff Hagelman of Whataburger are leaders of two of San Antonio’s best examples of Legal and HR alignment. Carolyn and Jeff along with members of their respective HR teams will share their insights and wisdom of how their teams are continually focused on improving the communication and relationship between Legal and HR.

This panel will explore the ways doing business with the federal government can differ from doing business in the commercial marketplace.  The panelists, including in-house counsel from a major government contractor and outside counsel specializing in government contracts, will engage in a candid discussion of the pros and cons of government contracting to help attendees assess whether the benefits of working with Uncle Sam—including current opportunities under the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan—ultimately outweigh the risks.

The discussion will highlight notable differences in government and commercial business practices—from the legal and regulatory compliance frameworks that apply, to the ways contract terms are negotiated, administered and enforced.  The panel will also include a discussion of strategic market considerations for companies that are contemplating entering government contracting or current government contractors interested in expanding or diversifying their federal business.

We all know that pro bono is important and important to our communities. We also realize that at times pro bono can be emotionally challenging. Although lawyers tend to be a stoic bunch, it is often recommended that pro bono programs include regular opportunities for volunteers to talk about their cases, experiences, and, of course, struggles as a way to reduce burnout, compassion fatigue and even secondary trauma. To that end, the Pro Bono Committee will host a quarterly virtual meeting space for anyone and everyone to join to listen and share stories, experience, advice and feedback.

‘A Price Worth Paying?’ is a drama film focusing on the board of directors, senior executive team, and external advisors of a fictitious company, Maartel International, and looking at how well each identifies, and reacts to, risks emerging within the business.

The film looks at difficult issues such as executive compensation, the risks involved in an acquisition in an emerging market, the adequacy of the company’s response to a serious whistle blower allegation and the role played, and advice given, by Maartel International’s General Counsel. It reinforces the importance of setting the right “tone from the top”,  ensuring that adequate compliance policies are in place and the crucial role.

The next-generation of wireless technologies – known as 5G – is here.  Not only is it expected to offer network speeds that are up to 100 times faster than 4G LTE and reduce latency to nearly zero, it will allow networks to handle 100 times the number of connected devices, revolutionizing business and consumer connectivity and enabling the “Internet of Things.”

In this program, we will review the regulatory landscape impacting 5G services and the recent actions taken by the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) to ensure the U.S. maintains leadership in commercial 5G deployments.  We will also hear from experts in the wireless and cable industries about what the private sector has been doing and how your companies can play a role in the new 5G world.

Presented by Kara Graves, Assistant Vice President, Regulatory Affairs at CTIA, Danielle Pineres, Vice President & Associate General Counsel at NCTA- The Internet and Television Association and Jessica Greffenius, Associate Chief, Mobility Division, Wireless Telecommunications Bureau at Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
