Attorneys for businesses with active marketing departments often find themselves at odds with what is going on in that business function. Whether it is because of the constant evolution of digital marketing and adtech, the speed at which modern advertising must take place, the "move fast and break things" mentality of marketers, or some combination, attorneys sometimes find themselves playing catchup to the marketing team and can get a reputation as a bottleneck or the "no" department. In this presentation we will examine the reasons behind this divide and discuss ways that attorneys can build competency in advertising topics (especially adtech), examine some of the trends in digital advertising and how attorneys can approach these trends, and also how attorneys can ethically balance the need to give the marketing team some leash to be creative while ensuring compliance.
