Overview (Program Summary)

A program hosted by:

ACC Georgia

The ACC Georgia Chapter welcomes Polsinelli whose attorneys, Gabrielle Mas Bell, Eric J. Hanson, Ellen H. Persons and Leslie F. Spasser will present “Artificial Intelligence In A Commercial Context: What Every Practitioner Should Know”. The panel participants will provide an update on recent regulatory, judicial and policy developments that impact the deployment, commercialization and protection of artificial intelligence-powered applications.  The panelists will discuss how the evolving legal and regulatory environment impacts strategies for protecting IP, contracting for the licensing and use of artificial intelligence-based applications, using artificial intelligence in the context of litigation and implementing effective governance processes.  Through the use of a fact pattern involving a company that has developed and commercialized an AI application, the panelists will engage in an interactive discussion of these issues in a real-world context to provide practical guidance to in-house counsel.

Speakers

Gabriella Mas Bell is an associate in the Technology Transactions and Data Privacy practice in Polsinelli’s Atlanta office. Gabriella negotiates complex technology and related transactions for clients across a variety of industries. She is committed to understanding each client’s business model, practices and objectives to help protect their investment in a range of technologies. Gabriella has experience navigating the media, communications, software, and healthcare industries, among others. Typical transactions that Gabriella handles involve Cloud computing/hosted services, technology and media licensing, outsourcing, advertising and new technology development and deployment (including artificial intelligence). She also conducts risk assessments for various corporate transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, and provides counseling on privacy and data security issues and compliance with applicable privacy and data security regulations.

Prior to joining Polsinelli, Gabriella practiced corporate law at the Atlanta office of an international law firm, where she specialized in international and domestic mergers and acquisitions, and served as a judicial clerk to the Honorable George W. Draper III at The Supreme Court of the State of Missouri.

Eric Hanson has over 20 years of experience representing clients in all aspects of domestic and international IP law, including managing large global patent and trademark portfolios, drafting and negotiating all forms of technology, data and software contracts and licenses, overseeing IP-related merger and acquisition issues, developing IP monetization strategies, clearing (freedom-to-operate), enforcing and defending IP rights, evaluating and negotiating infringement claims, counseling day-to-day patent, trademark, copyright and trade secrets issues, creating training programs, guiding R&D teams, and assisting with IP financing, investment and valuation strategies. He co-leads the firm’s Digital Health Initiative – a multidisciplinary collaboration among attorneys and clients to address legal issues at the intersection of health and technology. Eric’s extensive experience includes working with a variety of cutting-edge technologies and industries, including medical devices, personalized medicine, hardware/software enhancements and functionality, communications, building automation and controls, software functionality, building/construction products, industrial/manufacturing equipment, data processing, Internet & business methods, 3D printing, fiber optics, chemicals, life sciences, biotechnology, and nuclear power plants.

As a former Assistant U.S. Attorney, Ellen Persons uses her experience to help clients navigate the complexities of government investigations. She represents corporate and individual clients in civil and criminal investigations by the Department of Justice, regulatory investigations and enforcement actions by the SEC and other federal and state agencies, and complex litigation matters. Ellen focuses her practice on defending clients against allegations of fraud including matters involving the False Claims Act, the Anti-Kickback Statute, healthcare fraud, anti-trust violations, and securities fraud. She has represented clients in the healthcare, automotive, government contracting, education, banking, and manufacturing industries. Ellen also conducts internal investigations on behalf of companies and counsels them on remedial actions and disclosure decisions. Ellen previously served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia. While there she investigated and prosecuted financial fraud against the federal government in the areas of healthcare, government contracting, education, and the mortgage industry.
