Overview (Program Summary)

A program hosted by:

ACC Southern California

As an occupational group, lawyers are significantly less happy and less healthy than their peers in other professions, and are more prone to burnout. The risk of burnout has increased for many attorneys given the new Covid reality of managing increasing demands at work while juggling family responsibilities, and the further-diminished boundaries between work and home. This panel will examine empirical and anecdotal evidence of burnout and its impact on professional competence and lawyer well-being.

The discussion will include an overview of the risk factors and symptoms associated with burnout (including the psychological, behavioral, and physiological systems, such as substance abuse and depression), as well as key issues with remote work environments that intensify workplace stressors. The panel will discuss how to detect early signs of burnout, as well as provide resources for support. The presentation will conclude with practical tips and strategies that attorneys and leadership can employ to navigate uncertainty in the changed professional landscape and to safeguard themselves and their teams against burnout.
