COVID-19 has altered the business landscape permanently against the backdrop of superpowers rivalries, decoupling between the economies of China, US, Japan, and the EU, as well as a protracted global economic recession due to lockdowns and social distancing measures implemented in many countries. Instead, the digital economy has become more important than ever. Within Asia, economic disruptions have also brought new opportunities in the markets. This seminar will examine the following issues:
- The New Business Landscape
The opportunities and dangers GCs should be cognizant of when advising their Boards in light of recent macro developments. The unique nature in operating across different jurisdictions, the increasing importance and role of investigative due diligence and business intelligence in managing current and potential new business partners and how should GCs capitalise and thrive under the “new normal”?
- Digital Economy and Regulating Information
The digital economy and the implication for managing the security of corporate data as the workforce gets displaced and dispersed due to COVID-19 measures imposed on the workforce by Governments and proposed regulatory requirements on protecting and safeguarding personal data in Singapore.
- Post COVID-19 and the Looming Disputes Storm
To ease the economic tension brought by COVID-19, governments in the region have taken temporary legislative measures to suspend the commencement of disputes and the enforcement of contractual claims. What happens to companies which are unable to comply with their contractual obligations? How can companies manage impending disputes and what are the dispute resolution solutions that companies can utilize?

Stanley Park is Managing Director and Head of Legal - Asia Pacific Region for Scotiabank's Global Banking and Markets Division. He is based in Singapore and is responsible for all legal matters across the region, including China, Japan, Korea, India, Australia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore. Among other responsibilities, Stanley provides (i) transactional advice and support to the Bank's businesses related to capital markets, investment banking, commodities, corporate lending/trade finance and global transaction banking; (ii) regulatory advice and support re the Bank's businesses; (iii) management of litigation and disputes; (iv) advice and support to the Bank's internal or proprietary functions (including proprietary investments, HR matters, Finance); and (v) participation in corporate governance or oversight.
Prior to joining Scotiabank, Stanley was with Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton and Coudert Brothers in NYC, from 1992 - 2001; with Salomon Smith Barney and UBS Securities in Tokyo from 2001 - 2007; with DKR Oasis, as Chief Compliance Officer, in Hong Kong in 2008; with Barclays Global Investors, as General Counsel, in Tokyo from 2009 - 2010; and with Daiwa Capital Markets, as Senior Legal Counsel, in Singapore and Hong Kong from 2011 - 2014.
Stanley graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 1985 and received his law degree from the Harvard Law School in 1988, where he served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review. Stanley has been a member of the New York State Bar since 1994.

Jeremy Tan

Jeremy Tan is a director in BRG’s Global Investigations + Strategic intelligence practice and is based in Singapore. He has a decade of experience advising private companies, law firms, and governments. He has supervised and led the execution of hundreds of investigative and intelligence gathering assignments in a multitude of industry sectors including in-depth reputational due diligence, asset tracing, political risk analysis, and threat assessments. Many of these discreet undertakings have supported decision-making for market entry, green field investments, pre-initial public offering, mergers and acquisitions, litigation support, and business strategy.
Before joining BRG, Mr. Tan worked at a global consultancy firm, where he led the growth of the investigations and business intelligence practice in Southeast Asia, particularly in Vietnam, Myanmar, and Indonesia. He also has deep experience managing projects in other Asia–Pacific (APAC) countries, particularly China and India, and globally.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Tan served in the Singapore Government’s Prime Minister’s Office, where he was involved in the identification and monitoring of emerging issues of political and strategic importance to Singapore and the wider APAC region. He routinely engaged senior government decision makers on scenario planning and strategy and explored the use of data analytics, machine learning, and natural language processing in qualitative research.
Mr. Tan has an MA in politics and philosophy and is fluent in English and Chinese.

He has nearly 30 years of experience in dispute resolution.
Francis believes that with proper advice, parties can manage disputes and do business with confidence. His practice covers a broad spectrum including advising listed companies and multinational corporations on their legal processes and risk management as well as representing clients in the Singapore Courts, International Arbitration and Mediation.
