Mentoring

As we enter the final calendar quarter of 2021, you are likely to be looking forward to the end of another pandemic impacted year and towards a year ahead that will (hopefully) be less reactive. What skills, mindset and strategies will you need to make the most of the opportunities ahead in the “new normal”?

Over the next couple of weeks, why not put some thought into your hopes and aspirations for 2022? If you know you could be achieving more, ACC Australia is here to give you the tools to help you achieve your goals.

One of the greatest head starts you can give yourself is to engage a mentor. If you are serious about your potential, you won’t want just any mentor, you will want an ACC Australia mentor!

  • ACC Australia mentors are in-house lawyers, most of whom have made the transition from private practice to in-house practice and understand the path you may be travelling.

  • ACC Australia provides in-depth training for our mentors that has been developed specifically for mentors in the in-house legal profession.

  • ACC Australia has an enviable level of repeat, highly experienced mentors. In 2021, we had a ratio of 2 to 1 mentors to mentees. This meant there was a highly diverse pool to ensure the best possible matches.

  • ACC Australia has a dedicated mentoring program facilitator, Dr Karina Butera, who has been successfully managing the program for over seven years.

  • The mentoring program facilitator personally assesses all applications and will only proceed with a mentoring partnership introduction if they are convinced the match is at least 80% spot-on.

  • The mentoring program is subsidised by our program sponsor, flexible resourcing experts, Orbit Legal, which means we can offer it to mentees at an extremely competitive price.

Our Future Leaders Mentoring Program is such a success, many mentees come back for more. Take for example, the experience of Lisa Wright (Legal Counsel, Telstra Corporation and ACC Australia’s iLEAD Award Taskforce Lead):

Lisa Wright Throughout my career, I have benefitted from formal and informal mentoring and enjoyed giving back to the profession as a mentor as well. I have participated in many programs and ACC Australia’s Mentoring Program by far has offered me the most support and the best matches as both an mentee and mentor. When I was new to in-house, mentoring was key to my journey of adapting to the change of culture and pace that I was used to in a law firm. I have kept going back to the program to get clearer on the direction I am taking in my career and also as a way to focus my drive and energy. For example, while I was on parental leave, being mentored and also acting as a mentor helped me stay connected to my career and helped me feel supported during a time of significant change. I still feel supported by my mentor even after completing the mentoring program and I am currently working with another mentor who brings a new perspective to my ongoing professional development. I have also grown from the opportunity to pass on my own learnings and experiences to a handful of brilliant mentees that I continue to be inspired by.

So, put your thinking cap on and consider the ways your career and impact could be accelerated by participating in the ACC Australia Future Leaders Mentoring Program. Applications for the 2021 will open in two weeks, so keep your eye out for further announcements or email mentoring@accglobal.com to put yourself on the express notice list.
