Today reminded me why I love being an in-house lawyer

Did you hear about our first in-person Victorian In-House Counsel Day in three years??? Last week, over 100 in-house counsel came together in Melbourne's CBD to connect.

As in-house lawyers, we can easily get caught up in our daily tasks and to-do-list, but one first-time delegate told us "Today reminded me why I love being an in-house lawyer!"

The day was an excellent opportunity to discuss trends, participate in roundtables, and hear from experts in our field. The attendees were highly engaged and enthusiastic, making for a truly exceptional experience.

Here are some of our members' best bits or key takeaways from the day:

  • Emily Madder, General Counsel at Siemens Energy Pty. Ltd, found Fiona McLeay's talk on legal and ethical issues facing in-house counsel to be practical and insightful. Jodie Fox from Worklogic also shared some great tips on managing sexual harassment claims with regards to the Respect@Work legislation.

  • Kate Sherburn, Legal Beagle at Who Gives A Crap, loved getting together in a room full of Sole Legal Counsel to share insights and pain points. As an SLO, it's crucial to have a network, and it was great to learn from others' experiences.

  • Rhyse Collins, Legal Counsel at the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne, enjoyed networking and catching up with others in the industry. The Vic Bar presentation on how best to utilise counsel was also super informative and practical.

  • Ingrid Segota, Executive Director at ACC Australia, shared her excitement at returning to in-person conferencing again. The association provides in-house counsel with the opportunity to craft their own program, upskill, and gather with other in-house counsel to share ideas and network. One down and four to go!

But the day wasn't all work and no play! We also had time to casually get together, chat, and discuss shared experiences over post-conference drinks.

The feedback from attendees and corporate partners was overwhelmingly positive, with many looking forward to attending the event again next year.  The team from ACC Australia had great fun organising this event, and we can't wait for the rest of the In-house Counsel Days happening around Australia over the coming months.
