This session is designed specifically for Asia-based regional in-house counsel and compliance professionals. It focuses not just on what is changing, but how those changes play out in practice, and what legal teams should be doing in response.

Speakers
Daniel (Dan) Cannistra is a partner in Crowell’s Washington, D.C. office and a member of the firm’s International Trade Group. His practice focuses on legislative, executive and regulatory representation of domestic and international clients on a broad spectrum of international trade matters. Dan has represented domestic and foreign companies in over 75 U.S. antidumping and countervailing duty cases before the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission under the Tariff Act of 1930. Many of these matters involved appeals to the U.S. Court of International Trade, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, binational panels under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and dispute settlement proceedings before the World Trade Organization (WTO). Dan has also represented clients in antidumping proceedings in the European Union, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, India, Thailand, Singapore, Guatemala and Taiwan.
Dan's government appointments include service to U.S. Trade Representative on the roster of international trade practitioners to resolve antidumping disputes involving NAFTA members. For the European Commission, Dan provided advice and training on international trade and antidumping methodology and practice. In addition, Dan has served as an international trade consultant to the governments of Guatemala and Singapore, providing technical advice to these governments on the application of international trade regulations consistent with international law and World Trade Organization agreements and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, Agreement on Antidumping.
Scott Wise is a partner in Crowell’s Denver office and a member of the firm’s International Trade Group. His practice focuses on export controls, economic sanctions, and outbound investment issues across industries, with an emphasis on emerging technologies and the technology industry.
Working with established and start-up tech companies, Scott helps clients to develop unique compliance programs that are responsive to the full range of regulations governing the exports of goods and services. He also trains and counsels clients on compliance with relevant export control regulations such as the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). In addition to technology companies, Scott advises companies in the aerospace and aviation, automotive, chemical, defense, electronics, energy, engineering, financial and insurance, manufacturing, professional services, security, and transportation industries, among others.
Prior to joining Crowell, Scott was the Assistant General Counsel for Global Trade at a multinational technology company where he led a consolidated team focusing on export controls, economic sanctions, and outbound investment. He was the lead export controls and economic sanctions attorney for key business groups ranging from emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, to aerospace and defense contracts, and to commercial software and gaming. In that role, Scott developed the company’s compliance approach to new regulations governing the export of various new technologies, including AI, integrated circuits and chips, and quantum computing, which involved coordination between senior government officials and business leaders. Scott also has prior law firm experience in the international trade practice area.
Nicole Janigian Simonian is the co-chair of Crowell’s International Trade Group and Global Mobility Lead. Her practice covers a range of international compliance and regulatory issues, including cross-border transactions, international trade, global mobility, and investigations
Having served as outside counsel and a strategic advisor for over 25 years for a wide range of clients from emerging growth to Fortune 100 companies throughout Asia, North America, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East, Nicole brings in-depth experience to advising companies on their movement of goods, services, and people across borders. She is a strategic advisor to public, private equity, and portfolio companies spanning a number of industries, including aerospace, personal care, semiconductors (assembly and testing), food and beverage, medical devices, retail, apparel and textiles, advertising, outsourcing services, nonprofit organizations, and universities.
Nicole has a passion for international policy issues and serving the community. She is the co-founder and host of Global Trade Talks, a podcast that shares brief perspectives on key global issues on international trade, current events, business, law, and public policy as they impact our lives. She is a member of the board of directors of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, the chair of the Chamber’s Global Initiatives Council, and a member of the Chamber’s World Trade Week Committee. She is also a member of the Pacific Council on International Policy, an international affairs organization focused on public policy issues impacting the West Coast. She recently was named Global Mobility Lawyer of the Year by The International Employment Lawyer (IEL).
