Overview (Program Summary)

A program hosted by:

ACC Charlotte

International and domestic travel presents unique and often misunderstood risks to client, firm, and personal data. This session provides a high‑level, practical overview of how data can be accessed, searched, or seized while traveling — whether at U.S. borders, within the United States, or abroad — and what legal, ethical, and technical considerations apply. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of travelers’ rights, the limits of government search authority over electronic devices, and the heightened risks posed by foreign jurisdictions. The presentation also covers ethical duties related to attorney‑client privilege and confidential business information, common threat vectors such as malware and data interception, and concrete steps individuals and organizations can take to reduce risk before, during, and after travel. The session concludes with practical guidance on device use, policy considerations, and how to respond if authorities seek access to privileged or confidential materials.
