Topic: Eviction Expungement Clinic
Clients: Low-income individuals and families
When: Thursday, February 3, 2022, 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM. Training begins at 9:30 AM (1 hour) followed by client meetings from 10:30 AM-11:30 AM
Where: Virtual
Who: Virginia-barred attorneys
Experience: None required
Training: 1 hour live/virtual training session at 9:30 AM
Support: Work in teams; LSNV attorneys will be available for questions during the client meetings
Time: Limited, with no ongoing commitment
Work: In Virginia, eviction proceedings remain on court records for ten years. However, beginning January 1, 2022, tenants can petition the court to expunge records from dismissed cases after a period of six months. These expungements are part of a vital effort to mitigate harmful consequences of evictions and expand access to safe and stable housing. The Eviction Expungement Clinic will pair volunteer attorneys with applicants to screen the cases for eviction expungement and to draft petitions and orders that the clients will submit to court pro se.
