Overview (Program Summary)

A program hosted by:

ACC National Capital Region

And now for something completely different - like your favorite podcast but with Virginia MCLE ethics credit… Join one of the country’s leading authorities on capital punishment for a fascinating look into death penalty proceedings.

In this two-hour program, we’ll explore the attorney/client relationship in capital cases, with a focus on who gets to decide key questions:

· Who makes the decision about what type of defense to present?
What is the lawyer’s obligation when a sane client orders counsel to drop all appeals and permit the client’s execution?

We will delve into the facts of a hypothetical case, identify the relevant Virginia ethics standards, and consider the constitutional standards that apply.

Speakers

Presented by Emerald Sponsor Squire Patton Boggs attorneys George Kendall, Corrine Irish, and Jenay Nurse. Mr. Kendall and his team have handled capital cases around the United States at trial, on appeal and in post-conviction proceedings including in the U.S. Supreme Court, where he has represented clients for more than 25 years.
