Overview (Program Summary)

A program hosted by:

ACC National Capital Region

Companies are increasingly called upon to navigate the important distinctions between the US and Canadian approaches to trademarks, patents, and data privacy. In this session, IP and privacy lawyers and in-house counsel will address some of the most pressing cross-border IP and privacy issues from a practical, “what do I need to know?” perspective.

The panelists will discuss commonalities and differences between the US and Canadian patent and trademark systems, and how these influence strategic decision-making with respect to patent and trademark portfolio management and enforcement respectively. The panelists will also explore trending cross-border privacy law issues, including: (1) how to figure out what Canadian privacy law(s) apply to your company, (2) what to know about cross-border data transfers to and from Canada, and (3) Canadian privacy law trends.

Presented by Kathleen Lemieux, Jason Mueller-Neuhaus, Partners and Ira Parghi, Counsel with Borden Ladner Gervais, Steven Halpern, Associate General Counsel, Intellectual Property at Hayward Industries, Inc.,  Andrea Cannon, Deputy General Counsel - IP at Nestlé Purina PetCare and Gang Xu, Director of Legal, VeriSign, Inc.
