Each year, Hollywood celebrates the best performances in motion pictures as the Oscars. Well, each year, we will celebrate the worst ethics violations in the legal profession at the Ethys.  Humorist Sean Carter will host the festivities and announce the award winners for:

  • Worst Original Excuse
  • Least Competent in a Legal Representation
  • Best Courtroom Outburst
  • Most Creative Billing
  • And much more…

In the process of recapping some of the most egregious Carter will demonstrate how the rest of us can avoid more common ethical violations.

Presenter:  Sean Carter, Humorist at law.  Sean Carter graduated from Harvard Law School in 1992. His ten years of legal practice focused on corporate securities and mergers and acquisitions. During this time, he represented such clients as GNC, Experian, The Boston Beer Company Homeside Lending, Safelite Auto Glass, J. Crew and many others. Most recently, he served as in-house counsel to a publicly-traded finance company. In 2002, Mr. Carter left the practice of law to pursue a career as the country's foremost Humorist at Law. Since then, Mr. Carter has crisscrossed the country delivering comedic professional educational seminars for more than 250 organizations in three dozen states.

11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. – Practical Negotiations: Are You a “Natural” Negotiator?

Whether you were born to wheel and deal or not, every lawyer can become a better negotiator by understanding the science – and yes, the art - of negotiating and using it to your advantage.  This presentation will cover the most important advance preparation factors, review various negotiation styles, and help you focus your attention on factors that will make a difference in your negotiation outcomes.   
 
Presenter: Kimberly Decker, Partner, Barley Snyder.  Utilizing a forward-thinking approach for providing solutions not roadblocks, Kim Decker represents U.S., international and nonprofit clients in a wide array of business and transactional affairs. She is the chair of the firm’s Securities Practice Group, assisting companies with public and private debt and equity offerings. She also assists public, private and nonprofit companies with merger and acquisition deals and works as general counsel for clients. Kim currently serves on Barley Snyder’s management committee, helping oversee the long-range future of the firm.

This session will address wellness topics including managing stress, improving health, and other methods of increasing wellness in yourself as well as throughout your legal department in order to improve the workplace environment. The session will also cover strategies for working efficiently, improving focus, and managing the impact technology has on the workplace and work itself.

Many consider certain contract provisions to be boilerplate – but are they? We’ll discuss the importance of specific contractual provisions, including arbitration, venue, jurisdiction, and indemnification, among others.

3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. – Top Agreements Issues With Intellectual Property

In this session, Helen Odar Wolstoncroft, Esq. will give an overview of issues in agreements that relate to intellectual property as well as common mistakes made with intellectual property provisions.

Presenter: Helen Odar Wolstoncroft, Esq., Saxton & Stump - Helen Odar Wolstoncroft, Esq. has extensive experience in intellectual property, including preparation and prosecution, counseling, licensing, and other corporate transactions as well as litigation. Throughout her career, Helen has worked in all aspects of intellectual property law, including copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and patents. Helen has worked at both law firms as well as at multinational corporations.
