ACC-DFW Pro Bono Past Event
For the seventh consecutive year, the pro bono committee of the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (“ACC DFW”) had the opportunity to participate in the Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Program, in partnership with Street Law, Inc. and TownView Center High School Judge Barefoot Sanders Law Magnet Program. The aim of the program is to encourage students who typically do not have access to the profession, to pursue legal careers. (More information on the program, including a video, is at www.streetlaw.org/acc). Over 40 ACC DFW volunteers visited the high school between March 28 and April 8 to teach sessions in four areas of the law: intellectual property, contracts, real estate and employment law.
Building upon those classroom sessions, ACC DFW members and pro bono sponsor Beacon Hill Legal Staffing partnered with the law firm of Thompson & Knight LLP to host an afternoon program for the high school students on May 13 at the firm’s Dallas office. Thompson & Knight Partner and Former United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Richard Roper, served as the keynote speaker. Mr. Roper spoke to the students about criminal employment and criminal real estate fraud cases he litigated as a U.S. Attorney, which related to the areas of law the students were studying. Workshops followed and were led by ACC DFW members in real estate, employment, and contracts law.
This semester’s ACC DFW team leaders were:
• Scott A. Young, Managing Attorney at TGI Friday's Inc. (Real Estate team leader and program coordinator for ACC DFW)
• Derek B. Lipscombe, Managing Counsel at Toyota Motor North America, Inc. (Employment team leader)
• Debera Hepburn, Senior Counsel at JCPenney (IP team leader)
• Jay Simmons, Senior Counsel at BMO Transportation Finance, division of BMO Harris Bank N.A. (Contracts team co-leader)
• Bill Wilson, Associate General Counsel & Vice President at BMO Transportation Finance, division of BMO Harris Bank N.A. (Contracts team co-leader)
