Overview (Program Summary)

A program hosted by:

ACC Australia

With the winners of the 2022 Small Legal Team of the year, as sponsored by Exigent Group, we look behind the scenes of what working for purpose (protecting our ocean ecosystems) looks like at the Australian Institute of Marine Science.

The team will discuss how they communicate differently, build their own tech-tools, and venture into new areas of law as part of their in-house role.

Dive right in for a sub-sea exploration of how the members of the AIMS team apply their legal skills in the marine science environment.

AIMS Winning team with Exigent

Winners of the ACC 2022 Small Legal Team of the Year, Frances Hoskins, Andrew Paloni and the AIMS team will talk about how a winning team does things differently, and makes a positive impact in the ESG field.

In 2022, AIMS’ small legal team of 5 worked to help deliver research partnerships of an unprecedented scale and complexity, at a critical time for the Great Barrier Reef and other marine ecosystems.

AIMS’ lawyers are highly valued project partners within AIMS for: their willingness to take the time needed to explain legal issues clearly to their colleagues; communicating in a way that connects with non-lawyers; and providing clear and pragmatic recommendations for ways forward in every matter.

The AIMS legal team has taken a hands-on role in many significant projects across the organisation including:

  • piloting an innovation program to be expanded through the organisation;
  • provided legal, policy and operational input into AIMS’ Indigenous Partnership Policy; and
  • being a key member of AIMS’ most complex and novel projects.

Notes
