Session I — Introduction to Accounting for Lawyers
Lawyers often need to review and address accounting documentation and information as part of their work. It is important for a lawyer to understand the basics of accounting in order to provide context to the documentation and information being reviewed. This program will provide an overview of financial documentation including the income statement and the balance sheet as well as an introduction to basic accounting principles. It will also include an introduction to and review of a company’s 10-K as well as an introduction to select financial analysis. The program will conclude with examples of financial statements in a litigation and corporate context.
Session II — The Best-Laid Plans Often Go Awry: Litigation Stories on the Unintended Consequences of Contracts
This program will present viewpoints from both outside and in-house counsel on how well-drafted contracts can still lead to unexpected and unwelcome outcomes in litigation. Real life “war stories” will be presented and discussed on a variety of topics, including dispute resolution, indemnification, choice of law and jurisdiction, confidentiality, data security, audit rights, and more. This is a must attend for even the highly-skilled drafter who will want to see how their documents hold up (or not) in court.
Session III — Best Practices for Partnering with a State Attorney General: “Do’s and Don’ts” in Communicating, Cooperating and Responding to State’s Investigative and Regulatory Inquiries
This presentation will introduce a state’s chief in-house attorney; describe the role of the office of the Attorney General, its responsibilities and powers, offer a road map for effective communication and cooperation with the AG’s office, and share insights of successes and failures. The presentation will also highlight recent cases on compliance matters and offer practical guidance to in-house counsel.
A full breakfast and mid-morning snacks will be provided.
