ACC New Jersey Hosts 12th Annual "Build-a-Backpack" Charity Event

ACC New Jersey members at the 12th annual "Build-a-Backpack" event.

O n August 15, the ACC New Jersey chapter hosted its 12th annual "Build-a-Backpack" charity event. Along with co-sponsors Thompson Hine and Samilow Harvest Group, and other generous donations made by members and member companies, the chapter hosted this family-friendly event, which shows ACC New Jersey family members how important charity is to the community.

Volunteers arrived early to set up 300 rainbow colored backpacks with all of the necessary school supplies, including notebooks, pencils, erasers, scissors, index cards, construction paper, glue, glue sticks, rulers, composition books, folders, colored pencils, colored markers, crayons, and even a good book to read.

ACC New Jersey volunteers and their children selected a backpack and walked the assembly line to stuff the backpack for a deserving child. Some members volunteered to conduct quality control to ensure each backpack was fully stocked, while other members assisted with the heavy lifting of the loaded backpacks onto vehicles for delivery. The success of this yearly program rests on the concerted effort by all who make this an enjoyable activity for each participant.

The receiving New Jersey schools are determined by their high percentage of enrollment in the US federal free lunch program. Children in the first- and second-grade classes of the two selected schools are the recipients of the backpacks.

This year's dinner featured a barbeque-style dinner and a dessert sundae bar - a treat enjoyed by all. The chapter also provides the participants with a special "Build-A-Backpack" t-shirt as a commemorative gift. In the past, ACC New Jersey has received thank you notes and drawings from many of the children, who greatly appreciated their gifts. ACC New Jersey thanks everyone who helped to contribute to this wonderful charity event.
