For this President’s message, I would like to highlight a few of our Chapter’s initiatives this summer — the Diversity Corporate Summer Internship Program; the Chapter’s community service event in partnership with ACC Global’s Community Service Month; and, the Charity Softball Game and Member Appreciation Night.
This summer, ACC Greater Philadelphia facilitated internships for 15 diverse law students in 15 legal departments of participating sponsor companies in the Greater Philadelphia region. Corporate participants included QVC, SAP, Subaru, Exelon, Fanatics, AmerisourceBergen, Amtrak, Burlington Stores, TE Connectivity, among others. These were paid internships that lasted for approximately eight weeks and provided the selected diverse law students with substantive experience and meaningful exposure to the roles and activities of in-house attorneys. ACCGP offers to cover part of each intern’s compensation through its diversity internship program endowment fund with the Philadelphia Bar Foundation. Further, all interns participated in Philadelphia VIP's Summer Pro Bono Day. This event allowed participating law students to gain practical tips and inspiration for using their legal training to expand access to justice, and to connect with local attorneys and judges to hear why and how they have incorporated pro bono into their legal careers. Several interns have continued on to careers in house, including one of the programs chairs, Sadeq Khan!
For the first time, ACCGP partnered with ACC Global’s Community Service Month for a service event at Cradles to Crayons. Cradles to Crayons provides “kid packs” including school supplies, clothes, books, and toys, to area children in need. Several volunteers from our Chapter spent an afternoon organizing clothes and toys and learning more about this incredible organization.
We appreciate Drinker’s sponsorship of the Diversity Summer Internship Program and Cozen O’Conner’s sponsorship of our service event and the Meet Your Counterparts (MYC) networking reception afterwards!
In July, the Chapter hosted its 3rd annual Charity Softball Game and Member Appreciation Night at the Blue Rocks Ballpark in Wilmington, DE. The event, open to members, sponsors, and their families, was a fun-filled evening of friendly competition and great food, which also raised money for our Diversity Summer Internship.
In addition, throughout the summer our Chapter has hosted CLE institutes, MYCs, and women’s events which were well-attended and well-received by our members. Thank you to our sponsors and presenters!
We are looking forward to our fall events, including the CLE institutes, roundtables, women’s events, MYCs, and especially our sponsor reception on September 12 at the Drexel University Kline Institute of Trial Advocacy. And get ready for the Gala!
Thank you for your continued support!
