For corporations and their employees, a white-collar investigation can spell the end of careers, heavy fines, the demise of a company that has existed for years, and, in the extreme, jail time. The damage does not always come from a conviction or even a formal prosecution. Just the hint of a criminal investigation by the government – agency, congressional, grand jury or some combination of all three – can be devastating financially and do enduring, if not irreparable, damage to a corporation’s most valuable asset – its brand – as well as the safety and reputation of its employees.
The moment the government comes knocking at the front door or nosing around the back door, a white-collar defense lawyer is the only person standing between the company and the awesome power of the government. The work of fending off the Feds starts very early, often just as the possibility of an investigation comes to light. In the best cases, an attorney can resolve problems at the investigative stage before they become public, let alone reach prosecution. If the government does go public, with public hearings, arrests, or a criminal prosecution, there is an array of defense options.

This program will explore the key role a white-collar defense lawyer plays, the strategic choices made, the tactics employed, the areas of law involved, and how lawyers can best manage relationships within the company.
