Downtown Dinner Program - Best Practices of General Counsel


University Club, Cathedral Hall, 76 East Monroe St., Chicago.  The Club has a dress code specifically stating no denim, shorts or tennis shoes permitted.  Collared shirts required for men.  Valet parking available.


This program has traditionally been one of our most popular, and for good reason. If we are not serving in the position of general counsel, we report to one and often aspire to serve in this capacity. Our all-star panel of accomplished, respected and gifted attorneys will discuss:

Cynthia Photos Abbott, Vice President, General Counsel & Assistant Secretary, Chicago Public Media – Ms. Abbott is responsible for all legal matters affecting the organization including corporate governance, risk management, intellectual property, contracts and managing outside counsel.  Previously, she served as Senior Legal Director of Motorola Mobility where she advised business leaders on a full range of legal issues.  This position was the culmination of an 18 year career with Motorola.  Prior to joining Motorola, Ms. Abbott was a partner at Katten Muchin & Rosenman.  She earned her bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and received her J.D. from Northwestern University.

Donald Gibson, General Counsel, MB Financial Bank, N.A. – Mr. Gibson is responsible for managing the overall legal affairs of this nationwide financial institution. Prior to joining MB Financial Bank, Gibson was a partner at McGuireWoods, LLP where he chaired the firm’s community banking industry team. Before McGuireWoods, Gibson was a partner at Ross & Hardies, L.P., was a founding partner of Tatooles, Foley, Kluever & Gibson and served as General Counsel and Assistant General Counsel at Boulevard Bancorp, Inc. He received his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University Chicago, magna cum laude, and his J.D. from Loyola University School of Law.

Brett J. Hart, Executive VP, Chief Administrative Officer & General Counsel, United Continental Holdings, Inc. – Mr. Hart is responsible for managing the company’s legal and environmental affairs, corporate security, corporate real estate worldwide, government affairs, community affairs, corporate communications and international, regulatory and policy matters. Prior to joining United, He was EVP, GC and Corporate Secretary at Sara Lee Corporation. Prior to Sara Lee, Brett was a partner at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal in Chicago. Before that, he served as Special Assistant to the General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Treasury in Washington, D.C. Brett received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School.

Joshua J. Mintz, Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation – Mr. Mintz is responsible for the overall legal affairs of the Foundation worldwide and is a member of the Executive Leadership Team that advises the President of the Foundation on policy matters and strategic direction. Prior to joining the Foundation, Josh was a partner with Sidley Austin LLP, specializing in commercial litigation and business reorganizations. He currently serves as a board member for several non-profits organizations, including Security Council Reports, Collective Shift and the Juvenile Protective Association. Josh received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado and his J.D. from the University of Miami School of Law, magna cum laude.
