Verizon's Legal Department Recieves Top Honor for Pro Bono Work

Association of Corporate Counsel Presents Award to Randal S. Milch and Verizon Communications Law Department for “Outstanding Pro Bono Efforts” in the In-house Community

Posted: Nov 21, 2011

Washington, D.C. (November 21, 2011) – The Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) presented the 2011 "ACC Corporate Pro Bono Award" to Randal S. Milch and the Verizon Communications Legal Department. The award, presented in Denver, CO at ACC's 2011 Annual Meeting, is given to a corporate counsel group for their outstanding achievements and dedication to pro bono legal services and projects.

"They have really raised the bar for other legal departments to do more with their resources to serve others," said ACC President & CEO Veta T. Richardson. "The pro bono program they formed with DLA Piper has accomplished a great amount in a short time. Helping to develop neighboring communities and providing services to domestic violence survivors and veterans, Verizon has been an exemplary example of giving back."

In 2009, Verizon launched its pro bono program with its partner and outside counsel, DLA Piper.  Examples of Verizon's efforts include working with the National Veterans Legal Services Program to help veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder apply for a new benefit for soldiers wounded in combat; participating in numerous Street Law Corporate Diversity Pipeline Programs to educate high school students on legal subjects; and has held many "Clinics in a Box" to help non-profits address pressing legal issues.

Additionally, Verizon has sponsored numerous Habitat for Humanity build days; sent large teams of its employees to volunteer and help prepare holiday gifts for a homeless shelter and a domestic-violence shelter; sponsored volunteers to work at food banks in Washington, D.C., and in New York City; and helped immigrant survivors of domestic violence secure their immigration status.

"Since we started our pro bono program, the majority of Verizon's attorneys have participated and devoted their skills to serving our communities in need. I am proud of what my team has accomplished and we are honored to be recognized by ACC and the in-house bar," said Randal S. Milch, executive vice president and general counsel of Verizon.
