Turn Off Your Computer and Printer

Aug 5, 2009

Before leaving the office for the evening or the weekend, don’t forget to turn off your computer, printer, and other office electronics.  Turning off your computer and printer is an easy way to save energy, and to save money.  For instance, even when it is not printing, a printer uses energy to remain on standby.  The same is true of your computer.

Also, consider changing your organization's computer settings to ensure that when your employees leave their desks for an extended period of time, their computers will automatically go into a low-power mode.  To maximize power savings, EPA recommends setting computers to enter system standby, or hibernate, after 30 to 60 minutes of inactivity. To save even more energy, set monitors to enter sleep mode after 5 to 20 minutes of inactivity. The lower the setting, the more energy your organization will save.

Learn more about how much energy you can save by powering off computers.
