Acc Cares - In Responce To Hurricane Katrina

ACC Provides Legal Assistance in the Gulf Region

ACC is pleased to announce the creation of the ACC Disaster Relief Fellowship Program, coordinated with Corporate Pro Bono (ACC's pro bono assistance partner) and Equal Justice Works (the premier non-profit coordinator of pro bono fellowships for public interest lawyers). With a grant of $75,000, ACC will fully fund the first ACC Disaster Relief Fellow to be sent to the Gulf region. The Fellow will provide direct legal services, help coordinate volunteers and assist local legal service providers. ACC's funding of this Fellowship will pay this Fellow's salary, and provide stipends for housing, travel, office space, computer, and other out-of-pocket costs for one year.

If you would like to support ACC's Disaster Relief Fellowship, please contact Susan Hackett at hackett@acca.com, or Eve Runyon at runyon@acca.com. Every $75,000 ACC raises will place another Fellow on the ground where pro bono services are desperately needed. If you would like to make a contribution toward this fellowship fund, contact LeAnna Hart Gipson at Equal Justice Works at lgipson@equaljusticeworks.org.

Help Finding Jobs

ACC is offering the following services to its members, their employers, and legal recruiters:

  • Lawyers displaced by Katrina may insert the words "Affected By Katrina" into their In-house Jobline resume. Potential employers and recruiters will be able to search by this keyword, allowing them to reach those most in need.
  • All non-member companies and legal recruiters will receive a $300 rebate directly from ACC for any in-house position posted on In-house Jobline that is filled with a lawyer displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

For additional information about this special Jobline promotion or In-house Jobline please send queries to carson@acca.com.

Matching Contributions

ACC Staff

ACC challenged its staff to a dollar for dollar matching contribution to the American Red Cross hurricane Katrina Fund. With great pride, ACC and its staff presented the Red Cross with a $10,000 check on September 10, 2005. Additionally, ACC sponsored an American Red Cross blood drive for all tenants of its' office building in Washington, DC.

Chapter Contributions

Immediately following Hurricane Katrina, ACC issued a challenge to its chapters: contribute up to $5,000 to a hurricane related charity and the national office would match the contribution dollar for dollar. We are very pleased to announce that 11 chapters (Baltimore, Central Florida, Georgia, Houston, Louisiana, Michigan, New Jersey [NJCCA], Northeast Ohio, Northeast, San Francisco Bay Area, South Florida) rose to the challenge and contributed a grand total of $38,000 to various charities. ACC matched every dollar contributed and made the following contributions:

Louisiana State Bar/LA Bar Foundation Disaster Relief Fund   $5,000.00
Disaster Legal Assistance of Alabama Legal Services   $1,500.00
North Mississippi Rural Legal Services   $1,500.00
Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program   $2,000.00
Southeast Louisiana Legal Services   $500.00
The Salvation Army National Headquarters   $3,500.00
The American Red Cross   $24,000.00

Congratulations to all that participated.
