Essential Responsibilities
Work cross-functionally with others on ACC staff and various member groups to drive advocacy and public policy positions on behalf of ACC and its constituents. This entails working in support of the ACC Board and its Advocacy Committee to spotlight key issues and make recommendations regarding ACC’s positions. This position must coordinate cooperatively with ACC chapters, committees and other member segments to elevate ACC as the voice of the in-house bar.
Qualifications and Experience
Education - Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent; admitted to the bar with an active license to practice, preferably in the District of Columbia
Work Experience - Minimum 5-7 years practicing law, including in the area of public policy preferably including work in an in-house law department or law firm. Prior experience working with and/or supporting senior in-house leadership, a plus. Judicial clerkship and/or appellate litigation experience preferred.
Skills - This is not a junior-level position. Ability to read, analyze, comprehend, and interpret legal and regulatory requirements, management concepts, general business periodicals, professional journals and complex subject matter on a broad range of substantive legal and business topics in order to distill and package the information in a succinct, interesting, and meaningful manner drawing connections to the ACC mission, programs, and services. Possess a solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office software. Strong critical thinking, legal research, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Outstanding oral and written communication skills. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to add, subtract, and review basic budgeting/financial documents. Good supervisory and project management skills. Ability to quickly and effectively communicate complex concepts to members, media, or others.
Capabilities - Abilitiy to engage and secure participation of ACC members and executive leaders. Ability to work independently yet possess good judgment in seeking input from senior staff when appropriate. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from executives, members, the press, and other ACC staff. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to problem solve and utilize well-developed conflict resolution skills to build consensus and advance an agenda.
