"In House... in the community"

HAbitat for Humanity Build Day on Sat., Nov. 14

Details:

Location: We will help build a 9-unit condominium at the Maple Ridge complex, 4150 Stevenson Street, Fairfax, VA 22030.The site is located at the intersection of Waples Mill Road and Lee Highway.

Parking:  Two blocks north in the shopping center at Stevenson Street and Government Center Parkway behind Burlington Coat Factory.  Out of courtesy to neighborhood residents, please do not park on Stevenson Street or in the parking lots for condominium residents.

Schedule:  The workday begins at 8:30 and we start cleaning up no later than 3:30 pm.  Please plan to work all day and arrive by 8:30AM for training. Volunteers who miss the 8:30AM training may not be able to perform the construction task of the day.

Individual volunteers should pre-register online at www.habitatnova.org or by e-mailing Bob Gans (WMACCA VP - External Relations) at rgans@csc.com.  If an individual has not pre-registered he/she can still come out to the worksite but may be asked to leave if the site is too full that day, volunteers can also call (703) 521-9890 ext 123 to learn of any last minute updates on a given workday.  The recorded message is updated by 5:00 every Tuesday and Friday.

Lunch is on-site at 12:00 pm.  Individuals please bring your own lunch. Use the site address above for deliveries.

Cancellations:  While we make every effort to keep our regular volunteer schedule, factors such as weather and the presence of subcontractors on site determine our ability to work on a given day.  To confirm that we are working on a given Wednesday or Saturday, call (703) 521.9890 x123 on Tuesday or Friday for an update on any cancellations.

No previous building experience is required to participate on site.  All that is required is willingness to work and willingness to learn. All necessary tools, safety equipment, and supervision are provided on the work site.  Volunteers are responsible for any of their own tools and personal possessions they choose to bring.  Children under 16 are not permitted on the site due to insurance restrictions.  Wear clothing appropriate for the weather, including sturdy boots or closed-in shoes and work gloves.  Sandals are not permitted on the worksite.

We welcome you, your family members and friends for this project.  Please contact Bob Gans, WMACCA VP - External Relations, at rgans@csc.com if you will plan to participate.

Nothing is Too Tough for WMACCA'S Green Team

WMACCA members, family, and friends (including valued sponsors) hoisted shovels, rakes, axes and saws to improve a horse path at Great Falls Park in Virginia as part of National Public Lands Day on Saturday, Sept. 26.  WMACCA volunteers also cleared invasive, non-native plants and removed trash.  In all, more than 30 volunteers participated in WMACCA's "In-House... In the Community" project.  The weather cooperated, the work was deeply satisfying, the company was delightful, and lunch was delicious.  What more could you ask?

This was our best-attended day at the park ever.  Members came from CSC, GMAC, Freddie Mac, Watson Wyatt, Kratos Defense, FICO, Cyren Call Communications, DynCorp, and Verizon Business.  Sponsors also participated from Deloitte Financial Advisory Services, Littler Mendelson, Jackson Lewis, and Morrison & Foerster.  Thanks to everyone who came out and we look forward to seeing you again (and many new faces) at our next project.

WMACCA Runs and Walks in Lawyers have heart EVENT

WMACCA fielded a team of hearty runners and walkers for this year's Lawyers Have Heart event - and everyone (as far as we know!) completed the event successfully and before they closed the doors due to darkness.  Thanks to all for their support of this worthwhile cause.  WMACCA was the Corporate Counsel Sponsor of the event!

During the last decade, Lawyer Have Heart has raised more than $5 million to benefit the American Heart Association, whose mission is building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. In 2007, WMACCA dedicated its participation to Stanley Jones, General Counsel of Colonial Parking, who passed away in May 2007 due to complications related to heart disease. For anyone who knew Stan, this was (and still is) a small but meaningful opportunity to honor one of our own in-house colleagues.  See you all again next year!

KUDOS to our Potomac Watershed clean-up team!

More than 40 WMACCA members, friends, family (including children) and sponsors helped gather 500 pounds of trash from the Potomac Watershed near Fletcher's Boathouse in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, April 4th.  The WMACCA team was among 120 volunteers who participated in the effort - which yielded 150 trash bags, 19 tires, and a Halloween jack-o-lantern!

A great time was had by all, followed by a pizza lunch.  Volunteers got WMACCA T-shirts, and a feeling of satisfaction from a job well done. We are very proud of our contribution to this effort. Scroll through our photo album:
