2009 Potomac Watershed Clean-Up at Fletcher's Boathouse

More than 40 WMACCA members, friends, family of all ages, and sponsors came out on a blustery Saturday morning in early April to help remove trash from the Potomac River Watershed.  Sporting bright green WMACCA T-shirts, the WMACCA volunteers helped fill 150 trashbags, and gather 19 tires and a discarded Halloween jack-o-lantern.  The very successful - and fun - clean-up project is an annual WMACCA event.  We finished off with a delicious pizza lunch.  Many thanks to those who participated!

Community Service Initiative - National Public Lands Day

WMACCA members and friends gathered on September 29, 2007 for a park clean-up project at Great Falls Park in Virginia. The event was part of the ACC Annual Community Service Project and National Public Lands Day. Members donned "In-House... In the Community" T-shirts and landscaped their hearts out, all in an effort to clean and beautify common areas of the park.

Team WMACCA Hits the Pavement in Lawyers Have Heart Run/Walk

On June 9, 2007, more than 25 members of "TEAM WMACCA" (including family and friends of WMACCA members) walked or ran in the LAWYERS HAVE HEART event to benefit the American Heart Association. We were happy to make our first appearance in this important event, and to do so in honor and in memory of our dear friend, Stanley D. Jones, General Counsel of Colonial Parking, who died earlier that spring of heart/lung disease. Thanks to all who participated - and see you next year!

WMACCA Community Service Initiative - March 31, 2007 - Potomac Watershed Clean-Up

On Saturday, March 31, 2007, more than 35 WMACCA members and friends participated in the 18th Annual Potomac Watershed Cleanup Day in support of the Alice Ferguson Foundation. The Fletchers Boathouse cleanup was a three-hour scramble to collect trash (including a shed door, a rusted barrel, a plastic kiddie chair, a Weber grill, a bike frame, fishing line, tennis balls), recycling materials (tires, bottles and cans) and other random items (a tv set in the middle of the woods?!), and it was a huge success. Armed with orange bags for trash, and blue bags for recycling, as well as rakes and gloves, and using a motor boat to tow the trash back to the boathouse, our members spent a beautiful spring morning cleaning up a local historic boating and fishing site in DC. We even got to witness the rescue of a wounded woodpecker, network with our WMACCA peers, and enjoy a pizza lunch as a reward for our hard work. As WMACCA expands its community service activities this year, we thank those of you who were able to join us for this rewarding activity. We invite you and other WMACCA members to join us on Saturday, May 5, 2007, for the DC Cares Servathon. Save the date - details to come soon!

Taking Care of Business Luncheon

Generally, the work of in-house counsel straddles the legal/business line. But Bo Jones Jr., publisher and CEO of The Washington Post, and David Rubenstein, co-founder and managing director of The Carlyle Group, have stepped over that line into purely business roles. On February 8, 2007, they shared their views on what qualities enable a lawyer to become a good business person and how their legal background helps them with their business roles.

Advising the Ultimate CEO

White House Counsel play a role closely akin to that played by in-house counsel in our companies and organizations. They must provide legal counsel to top management while being part of a working group that is balancing many other considerations – including policy issues, public relations, and others. For its December 2006 signature luncheon, WMACCA assembled a panel of four former counsel to the President, to discuss the lessons they learned in that role, and how they apply to advising corporate clients. Pictured here (from left to right) are panelists: David G. Leitch, General Counsel of Ford Motor Company (former Deputy Counsel to President George W. Bush); A.B. Culvahouse Jr. of O'Melveny & Myers LLP (former Counsel to President Reagan); Lanny J. Davis of Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP (former Special Counsel to President Clinton); and (seated) Beth Nolan of Crowell & Moring LLP (former Counsel to President Clinton).

2nd Annual Corporate Counsel Awards Reception

WMACCA created the Corporate Counsel Awards to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of the in-house bar and recognize some of the best in-house lawyers and departments in our region. Since 2005, the Awards Reception has been the highlight of WMACCA's year, attracting record attendance from the in-house, legal, and business communities, and the Awards have become the premier honor for in-house counsel.

General Counsel Forum Luncheon - June 2006

Since 1997, WMACCA has brought together a panel of distinguished general counsel from leading local companies and organizations for a roundtable discussion of how they got to the CLO seat, what the hot-button issues are on their desks, how they recruit, manage and motivate their staff, and what they want and need from outside counsel. The panelists always represent the diversity of WMACCA membership in terms of type of industry, size of company, and size of department. The discussion is candid, and both in-house and outside counsel value the insights provided.

Rudolph Giuliani Delivered Keynote at April 2006 Luncheon

In April 2006, WMACCA welcomed the Hon. Rudolph Giuliani as the keynote speaker for its monthly luncheon. In his talk, Mr. Giuliani noted that - with the heightened scrutiny of corporate behavior in the wake of the Enron and MCI scandals - corporations must be proactive in adopting appropriate business and ethics policies and procedures, diligent in policing their own behavior, and swift and effective in addressing any problems. He was charming, witty, and non-committal about a possible run in 2008. The keynote was followed by a a panel discussion about how in-house counsel should deal with a high-profile compliance action. Approximately 200 people -- mostly in-house counsel from some of the largest companies in this metro area -- attended the program. It was a huge success.
