Northeast Chapter
Pro Bono
To Our Northeast Chapter Members:
Most of us work 40-60 hours per week, then do our email at home. Afterward, some of us attempt to live a normal life ... spouse ... kids ... kid's school ... kid's activities ... church/temple ... house ... elderly care ... relax (ha!) ...
Then occasionally someone reminds us of the following from the Model Rules:
"Every lawyer has a professional responsibility to provide legal services to those unable to pay. A lawyer should aspire to render at least (50) hours of pro bono publico legal services per year ..."
And we wonder if they're serious. Who has time to even think about it, let alone set it up?
Well, the ACC Northeast Chapter can't create time for you, although we would if we could. But we can set it up. And we have. We have just announced a partnership with Greater Boston Legal Services and Southern Middlesex Legal Services specifically for our chapter members. You can decide how much time you have, the legal subject matters in which you want to contribute (from a menu), and the geography in which you want to serve. We'll work with our partners to provide the training and the 'administrivia', the easy part.
If you're still reading this, please continue. The following describes the legal subject matters, the amount of time each case might entail, and a brief description of the work. Help is needed with unemployment assistance, wills, bankruptcy, foreclosures, battered women, and other areas. One case per year would be much appreciated; and if you can do more, well, words seem inadequate.
Keep in mind that most Legal Services client incomes are less than $25,000 per year.
So please send Louise Rothery (acc-northeast@comcast.net) a response with the areas in which you can help. We'll contact you with training and other details.
Pro Bono Publico. For the public good. And much more.
We hope to hear from you.
Regards,
Bill O'Brien, Chairman, Pro Bono Publico Committe
