Hurricane Harvey Relief Update: ACC Donates to HVLP in Support of Greater Houston

We heard from ACC President & CEO, Veta Richardson, in the midst of Hurricane Harvey letting us know that ACC members around the country were thinking of us and were mobilizing to support displaced members, their families and the Greater Houston community in general.  With ACC’s call to action, many members traveled to various parts of Texas to assist with the rebuilding efforts and to provide legal services, and many more who were out of state registered with organizations like the Texas State Bar and Houston Volunteer Lawyers (HVLP) to take on pro bono cases.

Despite the devastation that later went on to visit other ACC members in Florida, California and Puerto Rico, our fellow in-house counsel did not forget about Houston.  We are pleased to share that the ACC Chapter Grant Program in consultation with our ACC Houston Chapter Board of Directors selected and is donating $4,000 to HVLP to support its ongoing pro bono legal efforts related to Hurricane Harvey relief.  We are grateful for this generous donation that will assist HVLP, a tremendous organization that does great work in our community, with continuing to carry out its mission.  ACC Houston has had a longstanding partnership with HVLP, and so we know what a difference these additional funds will make.

If you would like to learn more about ACC Houston’s pro bono programs and HVLP, be sure to sign up for the upcoming 3rd Annual Speed Pairing for Pro Bono Services event on February 22.  Click here to register and learn more.

Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program

Most ACC Houston chapter pro bono activities are in conjunction with clinics supported by the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program.  At these clinics, ACC volunteers provide legal advice and conduct intake interviews. HVLP support is available to assist in these interviews and provide translators if needed. Additional opportunities are available and encouraged for ACC members who desire to participate in other HVLP sponsored clinics or to represent clients who are accepted through the clinic intake process. Please visit the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program website for further information.

ACC Houston 3rd Annual Family Volunteer Day
Saturday, March 24, 2018
Houston Food Bank

Dear ACC Houston Members:

We would like to thank all of the chapter members and their families who participated in the Pro Bono Committee’s 2nd Annual Family Volunteer Day at the Houston Food Bank this past Saturday, April 23.  A fantastic time was had by all, and we had a great turnout.
The Houston Food Bank, which provides assistance to 800,000 individuals annually throughout 18 counties in Southeast Texas, relies heavily on volunteers to meet the demand for its services.  Together we made a significant impact by sorting and packing enough food to provide 14,500 meals to those who are most in need of assistance.  We are also proud of our efforts to help combat child hunger by assembling over 7,000 bags of food for the Houston Food Bank’s Backpack Buddy program.  Many children receive their only meals of the day through free or reduced-price meals at school, and as summer approaches, the Houston Food Bank will help to fill the gaps by providing those children with nutritional food.

While pro bono legal services are important, we look forward to continuing to expand our pro bono program to include family-friendly volunteer opportunities in support of the Greater Houston area.  If you missed this event and would like to join in on the fun and network with your colleagues all while serving the community, there will be other opportunities this year, so please keep an eye out for future correspondence.  We hope to see you at the next event!
